It does look like a piranha. It is a very shy fish which swims like a variety of tetra or barb.
It is an interesting small fish which I have never seen before.
The fins are of unusual shape and configuration. Note the two upper fins and the rear bottom fin.

Shifi is right, it's a Red-Bellied Pacu. Maybe good to be eaten when it grows big.

These fish have an interesting character.
They can engage in frenetic non-stop skirmishes with each other in a group, but do not show any serious damage.
Because of this, it is fun to watch them fight. They are not like Bettas, which have serious damage when they fight.

Among all the fish I have kept, somehow this is the most fascinating fish. They have great personality, lol.

Do you intend to keep them till they grow big? What size tank are you using?

I am rather attached to these fish although this is the first time I come across this species, especially the ones with red colouration. Hope I can eventually keep them in a 5ft or 6ft tank some day. They are not fussy about food and will eat practically any type of food.

I am happy to have come across them in a small LFS with just a few of them them in the tank.

Are males and female Pacus different in appearance?

Haha if you ever think of wanting to acquire some nice sized ones I have 5. I'm thinking of letting them go because I want to keep plants.. They nip on plants btw.

Ah, thanks. I must make a trip there soon to look-see. Hope tp find some really small ones.
These things grow really fast, especially with generous feeding.
