I saw this at Seaview too... was in use in one of their display tanks.

From bits of info i could find online, apparently it pulls in water from the bottom by air lift, collects dirt and waste in the compartment (which you can periodically remove and clear out), while letting water though the black cone and up through the bio-media. Could be a good system for running adsorption resins like Purgien or Matrix Carbon too, or even just as a bio-media filter.

Here is the odd part... apparently the tiny white beads at the bottom are not functional, they are just there to weigh down the unit. Thats what i read from online reviews, maybe you can double-check your unit to confirm.

The actual area where the water flows though is via the black cone part, thats where the adsorption resins or bio-media are stored.

Was tempted to buy when I saw the Korean and Chinese models on taobao.

Wonder if it is better to vac out those poos regularly from the bottom, esp the large one or let the water rinse thru the culminated waste.
KrippyCrawly pool cleaner has a neat underwater moving vacuum device for pool. A miniature would be great for tank/pond.
