Hi guys. I am thinking of starting a new project and i have no experience with external canisters. My tank size is 45*29*30cm and I estimate that to be about 36-38L.

From Eheim website i see that 2211 is for about to 50L / flow rate to be 300L and 2213 for about 80L / flow rate to be 440L.
As such my worry is that would 2213 be too strong for my tank size? Personally leaning towards 2213 because of media it is able to house. But worried that it would cause too strong a current in the tank.

Intentions for the tank would be a Corydoras tank with a sand base substrate with low tech plants such as anubias and java ferns.

Thanks in advance for any advise.

The tank volume recommendations at the eheim website tend to be abit more "conservative" in their ratings, most aquarists would prefer to have more filtration rather than less.

For your 45cm tank, the eheim 2213 would be a better choice. It has higher flow rate (which will naturally be reduced when filter media are added and as it clogs up over time anyways) and much larger filter media volume (3x more than the 2211).

Just buy a set of single-tap or double-taps to install on the outflow hose, with those devices you can adjust the flow rate lower and control the current if required.

    It looks like this:

Whenever possible, its always better to get a higher flow rate filter because you can reduce it with taps... on the other-hand if you get a lower flow rate filter you can't increase it.

Eheim 2213 would be a better choice however I must warn you that there will be this part of the Eheim 2213 & 2217 called the inlet joint (rotatable) that may leak after some time of use. (See picture below). It's not that I want to discourage you but I think you should check that part properly and ensure that the waterproofing is tight when you purchase it from the fish shop because that's the part that leaks the easiest. If you see the photo you'll kind of know why. ;-)

To be fair, I had that filer for 5 or 6 years so I think it has done its fair share before it broke down.

I am using the 2213 with the Viv Mini Spin flow lily pipe to reduce flow. It really works if you want to reduce the flow. If you used this config in a 30x30x30cm tank, I would also say no problem.

Thank you both happydanio123 & erwinx for your advise.

I have located a second hand source so the information on a possible weak spot will help when purchasing.

I have previously seen the viv mini spin flow lily pipes and after your recommendation, have gone online to do further research including videos on how it helps as compared to the other kinds out in the market. I think that it would be a good investment shld i need to reduce the flow in the tank. Might try with the rain bar first to see how strong the currents would be. But definitely would be changing from the default green tubes that comes with the filter to a glass one to improve visibility in the tank.

personally using a 2211 for 4 years on a 2 ft tank and it works well... if its for 1.5ft and getting a 2213, you might need a reducer to slow down the flow rate and perhaps considering buying a basic lily pipe as your tank is low tech unless you gwoing demaning plants perhaps getting a good lily pipe with good aeration...

There is a hack for the Classic series canister filter. If you bought a higher flow rate classic canister filter, just change the impeller to the lower model ones, ie if you have the 2217 model and you think the flowrate is too fast, change to a 2215 impeller on the 2217 canister filter.

Thanks bros for the advise. I ended up getting a 2213 canister plus a 2213 subfilter. That reduced the flow slightly and at the same time provided with more volume to add in extra media. Furthermore I'm using a poppy lily pipe and it is working out wonderfully.

Regarding these double taps, where should be the water inlet and outlet be ?
Or can I presume that it does not matter and I can use either ends ?

    Thanks !

You can install them either way, its not directional. Just depends on you preference.

If you're using 2 sets of double taps, it helps to use different connecting ends on both filter inlet and outlet. This helps you identify which hose connects to which filter inlet/outlet during maintenance, since they all look the same under the tank cabinet.
