Same here got tons of them, been trying ways and means, but no avail.... Even manage to pull out an entire ball, similar to those small jap marimo balls that is quite popular now.. Anyone got a clue? And is mine same as his?

Having blackout for 2 days will not kill your plants unless your plants are dying. Some people even do blackout for a week to clear BBA.

Turn off your co2 if you are using, add Yamatos, red nose shrimps or Sae, cut down your light to 4 hours a day and do 50% wc every week. Do not dose fert

Re: Need help ! Hair algae !

I've found that the best method to combat these types of filamentous algae is a combination of treatments + algae-eaters... most people just use one method or the other on their own and wonder why it doesn't work. Its actually the combination of activities that make a big difference.

Use Excel and AlgExit treatment along with an army of hungry shrimps (and do not feed the shrimps at all), that will weaken/inhibit the algae and allow the shrimps to clear up the weakened algae and constantly keep it in check from thereon. The algae will never totally disappear once introduced into a tank though (tiny bits will still lurk around that even the shrimps can't reach), so you need to maintain an active colony of algae-eating shrimps to constantly feed on it to keep the algae at the minimum.

I do notice that when it comes to shrimps, many aquarists only put a few shrimps into a tank and expect them to eat up all the algae... in reality, each shrimp only eats abit of algae at a time, so a few will not be enough. The algae will usually be too tough for the shrimps to handle and grow faster than the shrimps can eat them. You literally need an army of shrimps to do the job, not just a few. For a standard 2ft tank, 100 cherry or malayan shrimps would be an ideal starting population for algae control (you can buy them in bulk bags at relatively low prices), can add more to boost their numbers too. If you go for yamato shrimps instead, due to their much larger size and appetite, 20-30 would usually be sufficient.

The problem is that mine is a purely setup shrimp tank. I know Excel is safe, but i am not sure about Algaexit? Is it really safe for shrimp?
One more thing, do i really need a blackout period of few day?

So far at normal bottle recommended dosages, AlgExit has been safely used in all my tanks, even those with alot of shrimps. I haven't spotted any deaths during the treatment.

Though if you have high-end expensive shrimps which are very sensitive and cannot afford to lose them, then i guess its best not to take the risk and consider using other methods instead.

Some people have feedback that certain livestock of theirs like nerite snails died off during treatment, but i've not experienced that with my nerite snails (all of them were still alive and active grazing on algae throughout treatment and after), so not sure if its isolated incidences or due to reactions with other additives/treatments in their tank. But just in case, if you have nerite snails (especially those expensive ones with nice patterns), maybe shift them out to another tank temporarily during treatment.
