I have a Eheim 2215 filter for some reason stopped functioning 1 week ago resulted my 9 koi fishes all die. After cleaning all the medias and try to use it again but it has a terrible smell even I changed the water many times, the smell still there. Can all the filter medias can be used again?

Is there any effective media in the market to sove this problem?

    Stagnant foul water smell?

If so, get rid of all your old media, use new media and re-cycle your tank/pond again. Most likely your filter went bad due to too much waste decomposing in the filter, or you took too long to clean the filter after it failed. Your filter hardware will still a faint smell... can't be helped, but it won't kill you fishes.

When you said the filter failed, you meant it mechanically stopped function or that it was still mechanically working but not doing it's chemical/bio-filtration function?

That's exactly right,, the stagnant foul water smell.

The filter has too much decomposed and also after the filter failed, I only cleaned them few days later (outstation overseas). If I use the Carbon to get rid the smell, can the all media be used again?

It mechanically stopped and because of too much waste in the filter (I think after open and checekd) and after cleaning, it works again. The filter only newly installed less than 1 month but may be 9 Koi fishes produced too much waste, in this case.

Ok. The main cause of the smell is probably that you cleaned it only a few days later.

The mechanical failure could be due to choking.

Yes, throw away all the media involved in that incident. Get new media and restart the cycling of the tank. You don't need to use carbon to remove the smell.

What media do you use and what order do you arrange them? That could be why the filter got choked.

Koi is 4 times the size of Goldfish in potential. To filter Koi "pond" with a 2215 is a tall order, you need excellent mechanical filter.

Since the death of your Koi, could mean they might be carrying a lot of disease, so don't bother with the old media, just get new ones, you might have more problems trying to save some dollars now.

Unfortunately, that is correct and explained why all my 9 koi fishes die.

Apart fromt the Eheim 2215 (external filter), also 1 Oceanfree 1000 L/hr internal filter + 1 Eheim 450L/hr internal filter running quite okay for months. But at the end, I guess the filter ower is still not enough. The costly lessen learnt. Thanks again.

You should be looking at a monster filter like the Eheim 2250 or 2260.

    May be.

I would probably stop to keep koi fish for a while and now focus my interest in planted tank. Again, Koi provide different kind of hobby as it is a living things.

I know what you mean... I have an arowana in my planted tank.

But a koi's sucky sucky eating method is a whole lot less painful then snapping jaws full of sharp pin-like teeth. Actually, arowana is quite gentle when feeding although it dominated the other 3 arowanas in it's tank at the LFS. Anyway.. we're going off-topic.
