My tank was setup around 7 month ago and was rearing tetras and guppies however last week i bought more guppies(3 males,2female) and the 3 male died overnight. I quarantine the guppies in another tank for half a day and introduce to my main tank. Any experts have any ideas what happening?

    Re: Newly introduced guppy died

Could be due to a significant difference in parameters from the LFS/breeder tank and your tank. Sometimes certain parameters could be higher than normal but because your current livestock have already slowly adapted to it, they can survive... but when you introduce new fishes they cannot adapt to the difference as easily and die.

Check your water parameters and also check the LFS/breeder water parameters, if it is indeed quite different, then you will need to do an extended drip acclimation on the fishes to give them sufficient time to adapt to your tank water parameters.

The other explanation could be the new male guppies were already sick or dying from the seller, so they succumb due to the added stress of transport and transfer.

Thanks for the detailed reply! i had monitored the guppies for hours when i introduced in and they looks good. Its ok after i off the aquarium light and the next morning i realised the 3 male is gone. could it be the suddenly darkness as i bought the fish from Polyart and is 24hrs LFS.

After being in the hobby for quite some time, you will develop your own procedure of introducing new fishes to your tank.

    Below is my procedure.
    1) Switch the tank light to dim or blue.
    2) Soak the bag in tank water for 30 mins to equalize the temperature.
    3) Drip tank water very slowly into the water bag.
    4) After 30 mins or more, transfer the fishes from the plastic bag to a floating breeder plastic container floating in the main tank.
    5) Here the new fish will encounter the tank water fully. I also feed them a little so they gain strength.
    6) After another 30 mins or more, they are transfer from the floating container to the main live tank.

It may seem a long process but why rush ? The fish is already bought and for you to enjoy and hopefully for as long as possible. Hope that helps.
