RO filtered water are usually used for top up of evaporated water. It can also be used to start your tank too!
Hi guys
Need some help from experienced people. I am intending to dabble into CRS and am in two minds about getting a RO filter, on top of an Eheim Cannister Ecco Pro 200 and a Hailea HS-28.
Is it possible to route filtered water from the Ecco to the RO filter, or must the RO filter be directly installed at the water pipes?
Would the water flow form the Ecco Pro 200 be enough to move water efficiently through the chiller into the tank given all the other media involved?
Need something to scratch that itchy hand of mine.

If you've learnt, teach, if you have, give.
Don't walk behind me as I might not lead, don't walk in front of me as I might not follow. Walk beside me, as my friend.
Mohamad Rohaizal is my name. If it's too hard, use BFG. I don't mind.
Whats the size and volume of the tank? It will help determine if there is still enough flow and circulation with that filter + chiller combo.
As for the RO unit, i haven't heard of anyone actually connecting it directly to a canister filter to purify water (usually its used to purify tap water from tap source)... though i guess you could connect it via a T-joint or Y-joint on the outflow hose so that a percentage of tank water flows into the RO unit (hopefully), then route the purified water back into the tank via a separate hose.
There would be the issue of RO waste water output reducing overall purified water going back into the tank though, so you'll probably need to top up water more frequently.
I'm looking to start a 3 feet tank for CRS though. So I'm not sure if the Eheim + Chiller combo would be sufficient. Would a decholorinator (ie. Prime) suffice in this case? Even if I do get RO water, I understand that it does not necessarily mean that my TDS is at 0?

Since its a shrimp tank... i'd assume the layout would be relatively flat with minimal obstructions, in such setups that filter and chiller combination should be okay.
Only thing is the HS-28 is a 1/10 hp chiller which most people use for 2ft tanks. For a 3ft tank which has 3x more water volume, it may kick in longer and take longer time to chill the water and maintain a cooler temperature (especially if you are going for lower temperatures when warmer weather comes back around). You could consider a more powerful chiller, perhaps a 1/8 hp one to provide better chilling efficiency and less/shorter kick in periods.
You could use tap water treated with Seachem Prime to supply water for the tank... though if you are keeping the more sensitive shrimp types and grades, it would still be better to use an RO unit to purify the tap water before usage, that way you can remineralize it to the target TDS and GH that better suit those shrimps you keep.
Whether an RO unit can process tap water to 0 TDS will depend on its quality and efficiency, some can do the job while others may still leave traces of impurities in the water (ie. 5-10 TDS), either way its still better than just using unprocessed tap water which may contain chemicals and toxic stuff that might affect sensitive livestock.
Ultimately it all depends on your budget and how far you want to go to create the ideal environment for the shrimps.
On the chiller, any recommendations for the 1/8hp chiller? I would reckon that the price difference may not necessarily be too large since the hs-28 would set be back $400+. Any brands to recommend besides Hailea? I'm not even considering Teco or Artica since they are top-end brands, which i don't need.
I am not sure how "sensitive" is sensitive really but I've got to give it a shot. Understand that CRS in-breeding is just too far and hence such pedigree breeding leads to issues like water conditions, etc. Even the water specs may vary from breeder to breeder so I've got to give it a shot. Probably might just buy a number to try out first before sinking it in further. I'm already in the midst of starting my new rack so will blog a journal about it and update progress from then on.

If you are not in a rush, there are used arctica 1/4 or 1/5 hp sales popping up from time to time going for 400-450.
