Coincidently I'm planning for the same. Save the hassle of managing individual tanks though that has its pros. Wouldn't say it's going to be easy but considering the amount of time I could save outweighs any inconvenience I'm putting myself through now. It's still at the drawing board stage. Hoping to commence in March, completion in May realistically. Looking toward some wild discus as I'm currently keeping some angels at a friends place now. What are you into?
My setup is to make 3 overflow pvc pipe and have the 3 tanks put side by side together and then the overflow will drain to a central sump. The sump will then be the Lifeline for all subsequent new tanks, so to speak the water maintenance and other miscellaneous or new setup will link from the sump to them.
So from the sump I can start some planters for aquaponics (grow beds or DWC or NFT) as the central filtration system or I can add some water features or some tubifex sub-culture.
This should take at least 3-4 months to complete.
I am always into community fish, a mix of livebearer - guppies, platy, mollies, sword tails
Schooling fish like neon, rasbora
Bigger fishes, like rainbow, barbs
A few gold fish, betta from itchy hand ... you know whenever you go to LFS...feel like buying some fish....and especially when you have kids.

Sounds cool, so there will be add-on tanks anticipated? So it's horizontal, like in a row? Due to constrains of space, mine would be in vertical racks in which water from the highest tier would overflow to the mid tier and then to the lowest tier before draining to a sump for filtration. Will there be any impending issues in your opinion & experience? Any advise would be appreciated.
Yah, I would expect the time needed to put everything + conditioning of water to be around 3-4 months. Let's see if there are any ways to expedite the whole process. The planning stage is rather excruciating. Sigh.
Yes I do share your exact sentiments as I'm currently relapsing from the Itchy Hand Syndrome. Sounds like you have everything going as planned. Kudos.
Mine is still in the works at the deliberating stage - Incoming & outgoing outlets, tank location, electrical & water points ... Etc. as in a major renovation, can't afford to overlook any corners. Pretty scary come to think of it.

What is your design for bring the water from your vertical setup multiple tanks to the sump?
Outstanding! Very intelligent cost saving idea. Thank you. Certainly worth a try... However as mine is a 3 tier vertical rack, tanks with holes drilled. Will it function just as effective for the lowest tank? Think I've got to figure that part out.
Here is how I thought mine works:
Water from top tank (with built-in overflow pipe) flows to the second tier tank (with built-in overflow pipe), and subsequently to the lowest tier (with built-in overflow pipe) and then drains out to an annex collection tank with chambers for filtration before returning back to the top tier. Basically it's like a single returning pump for all 3 tanks. Still at draft stage though. Workable?

Hi Hec, I've no experience with drilled tanks.. But I'm sure if the flow is from each tank direct to sump, there should not be much regulating needed. However, if the design is flow from top to second and last to sump... You may need to use tap to regulate. And is your return pump going to the top or direct to each tank, it may also required regulating to prevent overflowing the tanks.
Basically, input must equal output to prevent flooding your house.

Thanks for the input, antjoey1122. The original intention is to have the return pumped back to the top tank. But getting it direct to each tank sounds like a great idea! Thanks a great deal there.
Yea, it will be disastrous to find undesired ponding features in the house due to a miscalculation. In which case, I will have to start conducting some experiment before putting it into actual application. Look like theres some work to be done. Thanks for the heads up, really appreciate it.

Excellent masterplan mapped out with a concise diagram you have there. Incorporating the Swirl Flow and the Aquaponic idea is brilliant. Are you assembling the parts together already? Cant wait to see your next progression.
As I'll be back to rearing some wild Angel & Discus variants, I'm deciding between a closed circulation filtration system and mechanical filtration for individual tanks. Kind of apprehensive about the former as I recall there was a memorable episode when my collections were all wiped out due to the introduction of new additions (fishes from new shipment) to the tanks. While I'm deliberating on this, I'm scouting around for a tank maker. As for the schedule, I would project to have the set-up completed & running by early April. By the way, do you know of any reputable contractor?

Yes with Altum and Discus, you may want to be extra careful with the water parameter. I think you would not want to risk the convenience of a central filter or sump in this case.
Are you referring to contractor for piping or tanks?

Absolutely, any undesirable event should be averted with a little prudence. Well I guess conventional method is still the safest bet. Appreciate the advice.
Yes, I would probably need contacts for both contractor if you know of any. Since there would be a lot more work involved (daily water changing) without the convenience of a central sump, I could use some preinstalled drainage pipes from tanks directly to floor trap. If past experience is anything to go by, I'll probably keep only to a couple of tanks.
Is your set-up going well according to plan?
