Basing on my own discus breeding experiences, juveniles at 1 inch will thrive very well on both beefheart and tetra bits. This was particularly so for my red rose/alenquer discues. The little ones attack the beefheart like theres no tomorrow. The thing abt beefheart is of course it will affect the water quality. What I did was to change 90% water daily every day two hours after heavy feedings especially when they have eaten fully (bellies distended). From 1 inch size, they can grow to 2 to 2.5 inches within a month. My recipe for the beefheart followed closely those recommended by Bing Seto. My heater temp was normally only @29 degree celsius.
