also curious to see if anybody has had any experience with any solution for this!
One of the disadvantage of hanging filter is that the out flowing water is at the same spot / or very near the inflow.
Anyone know of any DIY or buy-off-shelves that can divert the flow to the other end beautifully?
I saw one simply stick a halved plastic cup at the outflow, does the trick although doesn't divert very far and doesn't look very nice.
Just a 1.5ft tank.

Some filters have what they call a surface skimmer attachment and a below-surface input attachment near the substrate. If you move by twisting the above-surface part where water is sucked in away from the outlet, then there won't be any water flowing back into your filter. Basically if you want to increase circulation by another method, then I suggest either increasing the flowrate of your filter by turning the ajustment knob to max out your water current so that the water won't be sucked back into the filter that easily. However if you think about it, the water is actually going in a cycle. Because assuming that your inlet opening for water to be sucked in is right at the bottom, where your substrate is, then water will have to flow from the outlet all the way down to the substrate, then back to the filter to be sucked up. Which means that there is ample time for the "clensed" water to mix with "unclensed" water. However if your flowrate is to slow or you just want more circulation, you can go with the methods above.

When I used HOFs previously, I always ensure the tank water level is in line with the outlet thus allowing the outflowing force of the water to push sideways which not only circulates the water but at the same time also agitate the surface and provide good oxygenation.
If the water level is not up to the outlet lip of HOF, the returning water will Just fall on one spot. This is the method used by 99% of hobbyists which I know.

Some HOFs have a lip extension that kind of looks like a scoop. I believe the original intent was for it to break the current going downwards but instead, to the sides. IIRC, most of the Gex HOFs have this out of the box.

Yes, most HOFs on the market have the water outlet lip which is designed to agitate the water surface.
But unfortunately many hobbyists somehow prefer the water return to fall on one spot, which they do by not filling the tank to the top but a couple of inches below the tank top, thus defeating the purpose of the designer.
