Hi there, from my past experience, female convicts usually have orange belly scales. Unfortunately, yours doesn't seem to have that. I may be wrong, but I doubt you have a female fish.

new to convict cichlids and the staff at seaview weren't exactly helpful (not blaming them though), so can anyone enlighten me if this is a female cichlid?

Its a boy. For convicts, whether its stripers or pink, the female will always display a yellowish-orange belly.
If you intend to breed, please remove any other inhabitants as they will be slaughtered by the pair....even your sucker fish.
