OK I am going to put up a new planted tank and have to select a base fert. I have used JBL Aquabasis before, seems to do pretty OK. There is now a promotion for Deponit 120, I'd like to hear some comments especially if you have used both before. Is the Deponit worth the 2-2˝ times the price of the JBL?

Haven't tried JBL, but I'm using Dennerle's Duponi mix. Plants don't seem to do exceptionally well in a newly planted set up. So I would assume that there's no visible difference.

    Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

mmm… sounds like I should save some money and just get two JBL packs and lace it with my Jaqno fert sticks

Alternatively, get a pack of each and lay them one over the other. Best of both worlds.

Use both JBL and Dennerle Deponit Mix before...didn't see much of a difference though except for price. I'll still suggest using flourite (it increase the KH a bit) with some startup peat and mulm at the bottom. Things don't get messy with flourite after uprooting jobs or rescapes as compared to lapis gravel over JBL/Dennerle Deponit mix.

Peter, the last time you introduced flourite to me, you mentioned peat and mulm. What are they, where to get andin what proportion should I mix with flourite? Pls advice.

thomas, its cheap compared to dennerle deponit mix, 1 box mixed with gravel per 100litres. David once commented that the recent JBL base fert wasn't as potent as those he used when he first started out in this hobby. I have also used dennerle and jbl and both are equally 'usable' , my recent aquatic compost for my 6ft went up in smoke... didn't mix the compost with gravel, causing problems to the substrate. Result: 6ft close down. *haiz*

this bioplast laterite mix, how big a pack does it come with, and do you mix it with base fert or just layer it over base fert and under the gravel?

I'm wondering is it because the dennerle can last longer thats why it's more expensive? Anybody care to share what's the lifespan of JBL and dennerle base fert assuming you're planting the same type of plants?

NA having a promotion of Deponit Mix 120, very aggressive price.

my 6ft using JBL shows sign of exhaustion after 5-6years. Dennerle in the other hand in my 4ft, looks like running strong after 5 yrs. But perhaps also depending on the plants I have in both tank, which is quite different in nature. 6ft will all rosette.. so exhaustion is quite understandably from the substrate, while my 4ft is mostly stemmed

I use to boost my JBL-based tiger lotus with Jaqno fert sticks, can kick them into blooming, quite potent but expensive.
