Hi everyone. Im in the midst of deciding whether to buy a 13mm or 17mm lily pipe for my 16mm canister filter hose.

What i understand online is that for 13mm lily pipe the 16mm hose would wrap around the lily pipe tube and vice versa for the 17mm lily pipe.

Can owners of lily pipes please chime in and help me make the decision. Which configuration are you all using?

Also is ebay the way to go for such pipes? Seems quite cheap compared to lfs. Also is anyone using a glass surface skimmer intake? Is it any good?

    Re: Lily pipe

    For size fittings...

    12/16 hose = 13mm Lily Pipes
    16/22 hose = 17mm Lily pipes

Just get the lily pipe size which match your hose size.

Glass lily pipes of various designs are available at most good LFS... the nicer/higher quality ones are usually sold at LFS that specialize in aquascaping, places like Green Chapter, Fishy Business, East Ocean, Aquatic Ave etc. It'll be good to visit those LFS to compare the designs and quality.

eBay is a good source for lily pipes too, but you do have to consider that all these are handmade items so there are differences in their quality and manufacture amongst individual pieces. Even when buying from LFS, you also have to check the individual sets for scratches, dents or cracks before purchase. So ordering them online has a certain measure of risk since you cannot check and select the good ones.

Btw, if you are not too confident with handling delicate glassware, there are now also acrylic versions too (much easier to handle), you can check out my review on them:

As for skimmer intake versions, the common ones available use a glass intake pipe with floating acrylic skimmer head, those do work quite well too. You just have to adjust the flow so that it is balanced between the skimmer and intake units.

    Re: Lily pipe

thanks for your input UA. think i got my answer clear as day. i have to go for the 17mm version with my 16mm internal diameter hose. and yes i am worried about buying online too cause after all that suspense waiting it just spoils your day to receive a piece that isnt up to expectation and its usually during such situations where i will just go out and pay whatever amount the shops demand just to get my itch fixed.
