MC should do well...
I have MC growing in my 2 feet tank which is about 29 to 30 degrees..
Hi can any bros advise if mc and hairgrass thrive well if i dont have a chiller/fan and co2...
only dose excel daily.
Still deciding what plants for foreground ..
My current tank is 2(L) x 1(w) x 1.5(h).
Light: 2 x 24w t5...
MC should do well...

I have 2 tanks with CO2
and some betta containers with low light and no CO2
I am using Hairgrass on a low tech aquarium and I must say Hairgrass grows like rabbits for a low tech setup. MC is also suitable for high tech setups but it is harder to grow and may require more professional Care. Will try growing that another time though.

Really? I have a different experience; my hairgrass is barely growing/propagating in my low-tech tank! It remains green and healthy but there has hardly been any propagation. But that is a good thing for me since I do intend for them to stay in that area instead of carpeting everywhere. Hair grass and mc will grow well with good light and Co2. Without both, the growth will be very slow, if MC don't get enough light, it will just grow upwards and will not creep. With out co2, I would suggest leaving out the carpet plant and grow other plants like Java fern, Java moss and nanas, but please note, the moss will be thin and spiky.

TLDR: If you're considering where you should invest your money in for your planted tank, I would say get a CO2 system and good lights. Forget chiller.
I think most plants can do well without chiller. However, the game changer will be CO2. If your focus is on plants, I will strongly encourage you to get a CO2 system.
If cost is a concern, you can keep a lookout on Carousell or the Marketplace sub-forum for 2nd-hand CO2 systems. You can spot some good deals at sub $100 region. CO2 systems are generally quite durable, so pre-owned items are good options to consider. Also, a 2L CO2 tank can easily last more than 1 year for a small tank depending on usage, each top-up costs about $20, so running cost is really low. CO2 regulator solenoids don't generate much heat and consume negligible amount of electricity.
Chillers on the other hand is a much bigger investment. Running and maintenance cost is in a different league. I think chillers are essential if you keep certain species of shrimps & fishes. However there are shrimps that can survive without chillers, and plenty of fish species that do well in our climate to choose from too. The same goes for most plants, with the exception of some moss species.
Personally I think chillers are over-sold in a planted aquarium. Your options in a planted tank without chiller is not really that limited. On the contrary, a CO2 system will bring you to a whole new level. Look around the forum and youtube, look at UrbanAquaria or XiaoZhuang's great looking tanks, many of these tanks I believe are without chillers but uses CO2 injection.
Sorry just re-read my above comment and have something to add.
I'm not saying that low-tech (Non CO2) won't work. I'm saying with CO2 injection, your options in a planted tank is greatly widen; hence it's a good investment to make.
Hi there Ivan! I don't think chillers have a direct effect on carpet plants. But I simply use my chiller to keep algae growth to the minimum. I don't think CO2 is really that important for Hairgrass growth too though. I have a low tech tank that has a lot of hairgrass in it and it's growing just fine although it isn't reproducing all over the place but just surviving and growing well.

Hi @happydanio123, I should've state that I've never owned a chiller system before. I've never thought of using chillers as a method of algae control. This is refreshingly new info to me, thanks for the tip.
Also, I'm sure carpet plants can work in no-CO2 tanks. I started out without CO2 trying to grow MC, sure it grew and creeped, but it was slow. After injecting CO2 (coupled with better lights + ferts), the MC just exploded and grew thick and lush. The effect is very apparent and satisfying, especially for someone who's new to the hobby. It just upped the game for me, makes me wanna learn more and try more things.
To the thread starter, sorry I may have deviated from your question. Yes you can grow MC (and hairgrass as stated by others) without CO2. But I just wanna share with you, that it's just so much more fun when you do (CO2).
To all reading this, please don't take it as I'm chiller-bashing, cause I'm not.

I should be trying both hairgrass and mc..then background plant will try on rotala green.
I have glosso and hairgrass in my low tech 30 x 60 that i only dose with excel every other day. Lights on 8 hours a day. Growth is slow but 1 month later and you can tell the glosso started to spread nicely. Doesn't grow upwards at all. I think the key is enough light and I keep the top open so that the water will not heat up in the day but water does evaporate much quicker when you do that.
My tank has been running for about 2 months now and I have not even changed water once ever since my initial setup.
