Few things I would like to share.
1) Riccia will not be messy if it is the only plant you have. Especially if your tank is small where it will be easy to "reach" them. I tested them on my main tank previously and they were really like AIDS. Unstopable, unbeatable, uncurable. I rescaped my tank because they keep hiding within my java moss here and there, hard to reach corners etc, even after I removed the meshes for a few months, they are still growing around. They were a pain then, but when given a chance, I believe they will look good and easy to maintain in a Riccia only tank.
2) Use small pieces of mesh to hold them down while making a forground will be easier. You will need to add more meshes as they grow. Using those "substrate" and I foresee you will have serious problems once they outgrow the weight.
3) It will be good if you can also include the size of your tank, type/amount of lights, number/types of residents in the tank, filters and not forgetting the fertilising practises etc.
Finally, show some pictures of your successful tank and It will be a great article/reference for anyone who wanna lay a finger on them.
Happy Planting.
