Newbie needs help again with (sick ?) neon tetra. please

Hi,

I have a 10 gal with 5 neon tetra, 3 mollies and a pleco. Three of the tetras are dull in color and have tiny white spots on fins and tail. Is this a disease and if so, can the mollies & pleco get it?

The white spots are most likely ich parasite infection... it usually spreads at LFS tanks and if you didn't quarantine or treat the new fishes beforehand, the parasites will be introduced to your main tank too. The ich parasites tend to affect fishes that are in stress condition, weak with low immunity or in adverse tank conditions.

Your mollies and pleco can also be infected with the ich parasite too. Once you see any fishes infected with ich in the tank, assume that the parasites are now everywhere in the tank and has infected all the fishes (some may show more symptoms than others). So you'll have to treat the entire tank, including everything connected to it (including the filter, nets and tools you use).

I face ur issue when I got the neon tetra together with my tank. I was advised to remove the neon tetra to avoid infection but since I do not have xtra tank or pump I bought a heater to bring the temperature of water up to 32 degree n I kept changing water bout 20% 2x weekly. I also added salt meant for freshwater fish to help. It did help but eventually all the tetra died. Where else the other fish in the tank were ok not affected at all. I am still learning. Yeah, neon tetras do tend to be more sensitive to salt and chemical treatments (some medications even recommend to only do half dosage when it comes to treating neon tetras) so the chances of success tend to be lower too. Just have to be more careful when treating those fishes.
