I just totally rescaped my tank, only the gravel and filter is unchanged. The question is, generally, when do you guys start normal fert regimes? When plants start to show signs of growing, or can you just start straight away?

I used the Estimative Index for my old tank, planning to do so for this tank too. Can I start straight away?

    Thanks

If most of your plants are fast growers, you fertilise the tank immediately. However, if majority of the plants are slow growers, do put substrate fertilisers to help these plant, you may delay liquid dosing.

You toss away the substrate for the rescape?
You can and should start dosing right away...you might be able to get away with 1/2 of the original dosing but it does not hurt to dose at full strength and might prevent any potential risk of underdosing. The main issue is still with CO2 which varies and is a can of worms of both new and old folks.

Nope, the substrate/filter/equipment all stayed, along with C02 injection rate. The previous tank did real well, so I'm hoping this new look will do so too.

Allright, I'll start dosing. Thanks guys!

Quite sometime back when charles was still the boss of biotope, he gave a lecture on the setup of planted tank. He later put the notes on the internet. I saved it in the hard disk but because the computer crash, all the info is gone. Anybody knows where to get or retreive it??

The info given was very comprehensive cos it tells you things like the duration of lights and CO2 injection from day 1 to day 14. So far i have not come across any treads or discussions on the dos and don't from day 1 to day 14. Hope you guys can enlighten me on this.

If using ADA soil and just scaped my new tank (2x1x1.5 = 81litres) with everything new, except for mulm from old filter added to new filter, dosing can start immediately? Lights 55W PL...

Tank not fully planted yet... Still waiting for stock to come in... CO2 not easy to measure due to ADA...

So better to half the amount? Or wait till fully planted then add?

As long as you add the mulm and add a lot of plants from day one, there is no need to wait.

Do you stop dosing when you have an algae issue?
What generally causes algae issues? Exesses or deficiencies?

What happens is folks add a few plants, no bacteria, don't add enough ferts/CO2, then add lots of light.
    Bad combo............

If you add lots of plants, then you are fine, if for some reason you cannot add plants, don't turn the light on till you can.

We trim our plants weekly, once every 2 -3 weeks etc, do yuo stop fertilizing for 7-30 days each time?

    No, of course not.

    Why is this any different?

    1. Not enough plants
    2. No bacteria(Vacuum an established tank, this mulm/bacterial slurry has precisely what an estblished tank has and it's free) Add this to the filter and bottonm of the substrate, you do not need a great deal but some is always good.
    3. Not adding enough nutrients from the start.
