It is typically placed below the drain pipe outlet. Water drops into the sock before entering the sump. But that is provided your drain pipe outlet is the standard setup where the outlet is above water. If you have the planted tank version were the pipe exits under water (like mine), then its difficult to use the sock that comes with a rigid ring. If you can find the type with drawstring then you can simply secure it over the outlet underwater.
However, the drawstring type typically are not as fine as the one with the rigid ring.
But the sock is pointless unless the particles are being drawn down the drain pipe into the sump.
If the particles do make it into the sump, then it should have been handled by the fine filter wool. Which is why I'm guessing the particles are not being sucked into the sump.
I'll try to post a photo of the sock later.

This item is currently in use by aquarist on the dark side of the hobby , the reef keeper ie saltwater tank.

The above link are just an example. For more finer particle , you need to employ sand filtration . Might be troublesome to use .

Here is a video on how to use it in a sump.

Another new equipment from Germany I think , same concept but less of a hassle .

The wool will not capture the fine particle , there are too much gap in it . A protein skimmer will remove most of the fine particle but would not work in freshwater .

Thanks for the video, BFG. You've given me some ideas to modify my sump to use filter socks.

Guys , I do not know if you know this but there is a new wavemaker in the market . It was design by Maxspect and it pushes water in a wide pattern , unlike the normal wavemaker that push water in a point form . It is called the Gyre wavemaker .
https://youtu.be/ZXMaY-S0moI
This will keep the fine particle suspended in the water column until they are removed by filtration . There are a few mode available from the Gyre . Watch the link above until the end . For large tank , you may need 2 of the large model , 1 ln each end of the tank . The distributor is De-lighting . There is however the ' 3rd party ' version from Jebao .

BFG, do you know any shops selling 200 micron filter pad or filter sock that have draw string?

Sorry vinz , not many lfs stock these version as the ones I saw while they start employing the use of filter sock usually is sold with the filter sock holder too. Your best bet is either c328 or seaview . You might try contacting lfs like Iwarna , Aquamarin , Madpetz , Fishy business and De-Lighting.
Maybe if you lucky , you might stumble on unsold batch though .

Take your time to digest the information . Personally , I owned the Maxspect but it haven't touch water due to my plan to change tank . Look for the unboxing video on youtube for both the Gyre and Crossflow wavemaker .
Fyi , these are created for saltwater tanks aka reef tank but I do not see any problem for freshwater usage . I would say it is also better suit for freshwater tank , be it fish tank or planted . You can mount it horizontally and even vertically at a corner to provide a circular flow.
Hope this helps !
