    Mini Fissidens Emersed

Hey everyone! As per title, need some info on growing this in an experimental 15cmx12cmx15cm emersed setup.
Tank will be covered with glass and opened periodically. Lighting is from Aqualighter Pico about 6hrs per day. The top two on lava rock are
Mini Fissidens and the one at the bottom front is some Christmas moss.

I've seen on this forum how people grow mini fissidens on stainless steel mesh, submerged and the fronds just automatically spread and cover the
entire mesh eventually after a few months completely. I've noticed that no trimming was done, and it was pretty much a drop and ignore kind of thing.
Also noticed that the tanks are mostly chilled.

    Question
    1) My experimental emersed tank will obviously not be chilled. Will I face issues growing mini fissidens?

    2) And will the mini fissidens naturally spread down to the bare lava rocks next to it? Or do I need to trim it and manually place the tiny fronds onto said lava rocks?

Any advise is much appreciated. Picture below for reference. Thanks!

    Re: Mini Fissidens Emersed

From my experience, fissidens can grow in a range of temperatures, so its not really a big issue whether you run a chiller/air-con or not.

In emersed setups, the 2 important factors are humidity and light. You have to make sure the fissidens are constantly hydrated and not dry out. As for light, there should be sufficient light for them to grow. Too little light and they will grow very slowly and look darker in color... too much light and they may get "burnt" and turn yellow. So you have to find the right combination.

You can check put my fissidens outdoor grow project for some reference...

Although the emersed stage in my setup is only 1-2 weeks for them to attach to the objects, the temperature in both emersed and submersed stages hit >32°C frequently, yet the fissidens still grow.

As for the fissidens spreading on objects, that can happen over time too, but the spread rate is very slow, so its better if you just trim some fissidens and place them on the bare lava rocks to attach on and grow. That will help to speed up the moss coverage on those objects.

    Re: Mini Fissidens Emersed

Thank you for the awesome invaluable in depth advice, Master UA! Did try using one of those Daiso transparent boxes (previous experiment) filled with water placed at the air con ledge for some mosses. Too much DIRECT sunlight I guess, it became an algae forest! Mosses got suffocated and turned brown. Algae was pearling though, lol. Placed them back in main planted tank and over time have thankfully turned lush green again.

For this experiment, will try to be more proactive and closely monitor certain things since it is in my room. Will proceed to trim and spread the fronds on to the bare lava rocks.

PS: at work, I always check your blog to see if there is anything new or read previous posts. Somehow I must've forgotten about your fissidens project, but remember it as soon as I clicked on the link you just provided. Looking forward to new content on your blog, UA!
