Airpump should work just fine if it's only on during dark period.

Are you running the airpump 24/7 at the moment (read above that you still need to buy a timer)? If you are, then the plants will not have enough CO2 in the day and that will affect their growth and ultimately, their rate of consumption of ammonia/ammonium and nitrates.

Heh heh... adjust one thing, tip the balance...

I noticed you have MH lamp on this tank... comes across to me like you're running a high-light, high-CO2 tank. With low ferts. No algae problems at all? What plants do you have in there?

I'm picking up on what Sims said... no water change? That will result in the accumulation of all kinds of stuff that in the long run could build up to toxic levels. Consider changing water regularly.
Vincent - AQ is for everyone, but not for 'u' and 'mi'.
Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:
A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.

    Hi Vinz,
Airpump is only on after lights go off.

Yes, I am running high light - average CO2 (1 to 2 bubbles), average ferts (back to normal, at first I thot the ferts were the culprit...now, back accordingly to the bottle instructions). Algae problem..used to have...but I cut back on the lights to about 6-7 hours. Now, it is within control...actually, I don't see much now.

My tank is mainly a moss tank + shrimps. Even tho I have MH, but my tank is deep, hence there are many shady areas. (2X2X2).

Hm...but it is true about the minimal water change. I also observed that when I do a water change, it will be usually followed by casualties. I do the anti-chlorine/choramine thing before I top up the water. I can't really do major change as that will have a definite impact on my shrimps.

    Thanks for the comments.

seems so. if u r using canister don't really bother changing ur water. once a month is enough.

u cycled ur tank already?? Planted tank don't really need to keep changing water. try to buy an average nitrate and ammonia remover.

what kind of shrimps u have.

    yamato and malayan very tough
    cherrys are tough
crs also quite good... mosquito too
bee and tiger are the worst. but still can make it if water is right.

    hope it helps

Hi Sims, (are you a real person? .. )
Yes, I am using canister. Doing monthly/bi-monthly maintenance. (Depends on mood).

My tank has been up for about 6 months already...that's enough time to cycle anything

I have all sorts of shrimps in my tank. I am basically a shirmp and moss person. My cherrys/yamatos/malayans are doing fine. Actually, I see alot of cherry babies. CRSs/mosquitos/bees/tigers are a tad sensitive. They are the ones that usually die out on me. My favourite shrimp is not CRS...it is mosquito (aka rocketshrimp...hence my nick ) Moss wise, I have java, erect, taiwan, xmas, weeping, mini, jigsaw, giant. (Quite a siao moss collector. (last two very rare, got from Lorba...nice chap, if you want, look for him).

But after fixing the above problem, I think they are more stable now. Quite sure that it is the co2 poisoning/lack of o2 problem. However, this morning, I couldn't find one of my CRS. (I have only 3 now ...everyday must mark attendance). But didn't find any bodies either...hope that it is just hiding.

good to hear u solved the problem.

actually all of the shrimps have slightly difference in water conditions.

weakest of all are bee and tigers. If I'm not wrong there's no local breed thus local water does affect them. And for the fact that they are dirt cheap. The handling of them from the start all the way from the exporters to fish car might be poor and so on.

ur rockets are nice too. If I never remember wrongly they breed like yamatos and malayans. the larvae kind. forgive if I'm wrong. rocket in the past more like a seasonal shrimp but now not so.

cherries are breeding means actually not much poor condition. it's just the other shrimps are too sensitive

all the best for ur shrimps

    HI Cakchew,
    Thanks for the comments.

I don't have snails in my tank...last time got a zebra snail. Nice, but shit all over the place...gave it away.

Aging the water...yes, I don't really do that...a tad troublesome.

c328 also sells the loose ones I think...

hehe...sorry, c328 stands for clementi, block 328. The shop near to the coffee shop. This is one important shop that you will need to know...sells most thing rather cheaply..and friendly too. Probably the most visited LFS in Singapore.

And aq members have a habit to hang around there when they have nothing better to do.

Wah...... if Grade A at $10 a piece. Its a very good deal then. Any idea if they still have? I was at the Pasir Farmway yesterday and they were selling very poor quality ones at $10/piece. At Balestier, it was Grade A but at $20/piece. Nice but too ex for a beginner.

BTW, can one tell the sex of the CRS just by looking at it. (Not carrying eggs lah)

Well..the grading..all very subjective. Nothing to stop them saying "B" one day and "A" another..., difference is very slight.

To tell if shrimp is boy or girl...look under the skirt.
Just kidding...females are supposed to be broader when you look top down.
However, I have no success telling them apart. What if the female is a slim one? or the male a fatso?
