I used the undergravel filter for my marine tank previously. Now that I'm trying to grow planted tank, I'm not sure if the undergravel filter can still be used.

How come it seems like nobody is using it??

Can anyone explain to me pls??

    Hello there,

Because undergravel filters are substrate-based, they pose problems for a planted tank. Having such a filter means having to regularly vaccumm the substrate, which isn't good for plants. Moreover, plant roots will grow all over it, eventually choking it up.

Another reason will be most equipment ( C02 reactors, UV sterilizers, blah blah ) are best connected to a cannistor filter. UGFs, frankly, are already/going to be obsolete.

Usually in planted tanks we like to put base fertiliser or soil below the gravel. Using a UGF will cause the base fertiliser to be sucked out of the substrate into the water, right? This will very likely cause algae problem.
