Have you tried to boil the wood for at least 30mins? It would help to speed-up the aging process of the driftwood and you can see for yourself how dark the 'soup of your wood'...Try it, it might work.Originally Posted by PEPSI

Some driftwood do not sink. For these wood, making them sink is easy. Either boil them if you have a large enough container, or soak them in a pail of water for two weeks at least, pouring boiling water on them every day from a kettle or something. Eventually it will sink.
and if you don't have the patience, place a big rock or 2 to weight it down
(ps. nick, I think time to do an article on wood used in planted tanks)
I usually tie a rock underneath as you wont see it when the plants grow and cover things up. If the piece can be adjusted easily without uprooting, you can take it up and cut the rock loose after some time.
For bigger pieces, i suggest following simon's method. 2 - 3 weeks should be enough.

Some woods will never sink, especially the small pieces one. I tried boiling, weighted it down for 2 to 3 weeks etc.. still did not work. So decided to glue to a stone finally.Originally Posted by lorba

Actually it really depends on what type of wood you have. In my personal opinion, Bogwood takes a longer time to sink. I have one that took me close to 2 months to sink.Originally Posted by Star-flog

yeah, assignment
type of wood
1) driftwood
2) bogwood
3) mangrove wood
bogwood are those with 2 tones, a darker brown on the top and lighter brown on the base. the heaviest of the lot, will stain your water and guarantee to sink
how to make a driftwood sink
my auntie boiled my bogwood for a day... immediately sank after that... have fun..
Seriously! I'v a driftwood (full of holes) and boiling for 2 hours already but still can not sink. If I continuous to boil for next few hours, can sink? sure?Originally Posted by augi_ow

It really depends.
When you boil the wood, the air inside expands and pushes the air near the surface out.
Then you stop boiling and weigh the wood down so it's completely submerged and let the water cool. The air inside will contract and suck water in to replace the expelled air.
Repeat every few hours.
Personally, I just soak the wood in just boiled water and repeat every 24 hours for 2 or 3 days.
Always weigh the wood down during soaking... the air will try to escape and thus exit the wood. If you let them float, the air won't escape.

I havent seen a bogwood that wouldn't sink.
I have a piece of very lightweight driftwood that refuses to sink. In the end I use it as a terrace bank... weighed down by the very gravel it's holding in place.![]()

I boiled this piece of driftwood in past 3 hours, still not sink. The wood is in the danger of falling apart.. because of hot and cold water (hot boiling & sink into cold water repeatedly). I've given up.

Once I had this piece of dw that refuse to sink. So I throw it in my dragon jar and forgot about it . About 6 month later, found that it had sunk. After sometime of using it in my tank, decided to take it out and left it dry. Now my friend had taken it over and he just complainted to me that it refuse to sink after 1 month in his tank.![]()
How come like that? I thought once it sinks it will be forever..Originally Posted by cairocks

I've a idea to just simply glue it on the tank bottom, solve the problem. The only issue it already set-up the tank, may be glue to stone to weight it down.
