What's on the back of my shrimp?

There is something on the back of my shrimp I hope someone here can help me with.

Is this normal? Noticed it for quite some time and it's the only shrimp with that on its back

hey!

that's a nice piece of fire red shrimp =)

that "thing" on the back of the shrimp is what they call the saddle. it is basically the eggs carried by a female shrimp.

theses clutches of eggs form up in a shape that looks the a saddle on a horse back. and identifying the saddle of your shrimps is one of the way of sexing your shrimps.

Shrimp with a saddle is female.
But without a saddle is not necessarily a male.
Males have a straight under belly while female have a curved.
