It could be BBA if it is dark green and stinks!

Um, that sounds more like BGA.
We need a more detailed description of this algae/whatever you're facing. Off-hand, I'd say blue-green algae, or BGA for short.
I'd be concerned about the fishes swimming to the surface right now, seems that your tank is severely out of balance. Check all possible causes and rectify the faults.
yea, sounds like BGA, like what squeel proposed. I ever seen Melvin of Mermaid testing some fert in his moss tank. The BGA is so like blue-green cellophane tape, spreading from gravel to leaves.
Cheers,
Andrew
Thanks for the help guys.It seems to have... died out in my tank. Probably a combination of a couple hundred newly hatched snails and adding more plants. Is it possible for plants to develope a resistance to algae? Mine sorta died for a few days and now I'm seeing fresh shoots. Or is something up with my water?

bga is a type of bacteria[commonly found in longkang] use some anti biotic[eg metronidazole] to rid of it and keep aeration high as the medicine kills off the good bacteria. continue regime of change 40% water and reduce dosage according to amt of water you remove. dose for three conseq days. the plants suffer a bit when medication is prolonged. http://www.seachem.com/support/forum...hread.php?t=61Originally Posted by XnSdVd
bga is a serious threat to your fishes and plants. you may wanna wear gloves when you treat this menace-medicine can penetrate skin. [killed some of my prized discus and covered plants with ugly slime]
reactivate your aq with nitrifying bacteria [i use hagen cycle]
everything should be ok.
if you ever decide you wanna rid of snails, some mini puffers are great.
stan
last resort is boil everything and start over!
