I'm looking to change my old OF filter. After looking at LFS, the price of Fluval C2 compared to other hob filter ( eg dophin) is big. The reason why I was looking at the fluval c2 was good review in this forum and YouTube. However, I can't find the answer I needed. Hence, the question is it worth buying the Fluval c2. Or what differeniate fluval compared to the others other than the branding itself.

I feel the main plus point is the various stages of filters in cooperated in the compact design. Other tradition HOF is simple and no multi stage and no media.
However depending on ur tank size, investing in a ehime basic canister filter will be better and more cost effective. The 2232 classic is good value beginner canister filter.

If you have money to burn, by all means buy the most expensive HOF filter. But I will go for simplicity by getting the biggest HOF I can find and the discard all the media cartridges that come with it and fill the space with small ceramic rings.

Whats your budget for filter? And does size and placement of filter matters to you? Canister is the way to go but depends on your pref.

By the way im using c4 at the moment.

Thanks guys for the suggestion. Canister is abit pricy for me as my budget is about 50+. Thus, hob filter is an ideal for me. I don't have issue with the size and placement of filter. Anyway, how's the C4 so far?

Re: Price difference between fluval c2 and other hob filter

To me personally c4 is good as it can house a huge load of bio media as i ditch the carbon filter. Also I am sure if you do your research much enough youll come to know that this filter will have rattling sound at the beginning but it is easily fixed by applying some vaseline at the impaler and its shaft or overtime it will quiet down on its own as muck build on it.

The mechanical filter is also house seperately and its easier to change the pads without disturbing the bio medias. C4 is big enough to house around 1/2 kg of pond matrix plus one satchet of seachem purigen.

If your budget is 50+ i would recommend getting the c3 at c328 for 60+ only. Thats the only place i know they sell very cheap. C2 is at 45 but i would recommend the biggest even if your tank is small cause flow can always be controlled.

I saw online many ppl ditch the carbon bag for other media. What does the seachem purigen do? Did you also bought it at c328?

Purigen has multiple uses if you googled it. As for my case i mainly use it as a water polisher and remove tannins and control my nitrate level.

Purigen is very good to use to reduce nitrate.

Try east ocean's Shiruba brand HOB. The durability is extraordinary. After i bought Shiruba models, i stopped using the others. Its considered a mid range product. Slightly more expensive than the OF and dolphin brands but you are assured of quality of motor and parts.

Eheim and Fluvals are like the branded stuff. European engineering but what is not made in China these days. Shiruba sounds japanese but its taiwan made. There was few times my hob jammed due to sand getting in the filter, the OF and dolphin brands overheated and melted. The shiruba didn't although it was hot too. After that experience, i never bought another brand hob.

Other places carry Shiruba too, but i had a not so good experience with a Shiruba air pump i bought at elsewhere. So i told myself i pay slightly more getting it at a shop i trust better.

Alternatively, you may get ista brand external canister and it is cheaper than shiruba brand. The price is slightly above $50. From my experience, you will not regret for getting canister over hof.

The factors you should consider is space and ease of maintenance. Some canister filters are a killer to maintain.

Thanks guys for your input, I think I will choose the fluval c3. Although the Shiruba hob seems tempting, doesn't come with media. Canister would take up space in my tank unless I get a bigger tank.

Canister dont take up much space in your tank. In fact not at all.

If you're sticking with HOB filter like the c3 perhaps can try to search on YouTube the plastic DIY bottle some hobbyist use to modify the filter splashing and flow.

Purigen comes in different size. The smallest 100g comes in sachet already and just rinse thoroughly before use.
Other size will come losely in a bottle and will need a very fine media bag to hold them.

What size filter did you get?

Re: Price difference between fluval c2 and other hob filter

Since you are using HOB , the 100g will be enough it comes in a bag which most likely able to fit inside your filter.
