Ph is a bit low. How about your kh?

Hi. I have a 1 gallon tank with marimo balls, java ferns and java moss and 1 betta. My java ferns leafs are turning brown and looks dead within a few weeks. I have trimmed off the brown leafs and now the plan looks bald.
I have purchased a dennerle scaper's green and been dosing on daily basis for few days but did not see any significant improvement. I have stopped the bio foam filter as I suspect that the air pump might have difused the co2.
Have been testing the water and the parameters are:
PH 6.4
Ammonia 1 to 3
Nitrate and nitrite
Temp hovering ard 28 to 30°
Ph is a bit low. How about your kh?

Just tested the tank water. The green on the java ferns as shown in yesterday pic was gone today. The leafs has totally become brown. Not sure if the plan had died or not.
Temp: 29.2°c
Nitrate: ~0.5mg/l
Nitrite: ~10mg/l
GH: ~5°d
KH: ~3-4°d
PH: ~6.8
Going to do a 25% water change later.

Too much water changes not enuff nutrients?

Ph too low. Need to raise up to 6.6-6.8
Take a close look for any green leafs. If no, then u can discard the whole plant. Your moss is also dying.

I tot Java Fern can survive 3-8 dKH and a pH of 6.0 to 7.5

Before we jump into more conclusions, how do you measure your water ph level? Calibrated ph meter? Ph solutions or ph test strip?

I am using the JBL EasyTest 6 in 1

Well its good to know the rough gauge, but test strip are not accurate compared to ph test pen or water test kit.
I would suggest u borrow from your friend or purchase a proper test kit. Hence, your ph reading could be +/- for now.
Do note on the expiry dates. U can also take a look if your fern has any rotting rhizomes. Damaged rhizomes could lower the ph level and create ammonia spike

Anyway went home today and saw my betta already dead. The ferns also all brown. Throw away all the plants except the marimo balls and clean up the tank.
Buying a PH and TDS tester. Hope in future I can do a better job.

I also wonder why the ferns turn brown.. I suspect is water temperature..
why temp so high? u got light on?
Definitely not easy to buffer. After u put your plants and filter then water volume will be less than a gallon.

My sand substrate is those will not affect water parameter and no nutrient type.
Will try to replant the tank. Now my tank only have marimo balls. Reading up on how to get things right for the next setup.

From the pictures posted it looks like the java ferns are attached to a wood slab that could have been meant for carpentry work and not driftwood. Such woods are usually chemically treated and the chemicals will leach out to the water killing both livestocks and plants. I once bought java ferns attached to such wood and it wiped out my entire tank of tiger endlers overnight.
Went to a fish store and the uncle was friendly. He told me that the plant I choose shld be able to survive with normal temperature.
Hope my new tank setup will do fine until the betta or shrimp or dwarf crayfish come in. 😁
Most probably will just get 5 crystal red shrimps as the tank look really small for the betta to swim around.

The colour of the Marimo moss balls don't look too good either. Maybe stop dosing for now and checking the water parameters of your tap water give useful info.
