Hi, is this normal? (please see attachment)

The leaves on my lily seem to always develop holes near where the leaf has contact with another leaf or object. Is this a sign of some kind of deficiency?

It happens to mine as well. No worries. And it's called a lotus. Commonly called Red Tiger Lotus.
    Cheers,

Err, that is the Queen of Siam, not the Red Tiger. The Reg Tiger "Lotus" has larger and thicker stripes. However, the floating leaves of the Queen of Siam has wider stripes the the submerged Red Tiger "Lotus".

An example of the Queen of Siam floating leaves can be seen in http://www.aquaticquotient.com/forum...ad.php?t=12960, 2nd attachment. The smaller leaves with the thich maroon and green pattern are surface leaves of the QoS.

The four-colour "lotus" also exhibits the same propagation method.

BTW, technically these are not lotuses... they are water lilies.

For my four colour lotus, I usually let the plantlet grow until the leaves are about 1 inch in diameter and at least 3 or 4 leaves before I detach it. I'll let it float in the tank till the leaves get to about 2 inches in diameter before planting them. You can plant them sooner if you can find it a good unshaded spot.

The "mother" leaf will also start to die. When this leaf is in bad shape, it's also a good time to detach the plantlet and let it float.

whoopps! made a mistake there! thanks for pointing it out, learn another valuable lesson!
Anyway, these plants grow to really tremendous sizes. I just trimmed some stalks and their leaves are palm size big! A hugh titanic in my small 2 ft!
    Cheers,
    Andrew

Short off-topic... the green tiger "lotus" has even bigger leaves... the record in my tank is bigger then my whole hand with fingers spread out.

Just a question, maybe the threadstarter would like to know as well.
It's about trimming, when we trim, do we have to cut the stalk as well? Well it's quite amusing to see my shrimps doing the balancing act on it when I leave them.
    Cheers,
    Andrew

Yes, cut of the stalk at the base. They rot away anyway, if you leave them.

Hi Vinz, Andrewtyr, thanks for the replies,

What is the best way to fertilize this plant? It's the only red plant in the tank, other than some balanse. Some time back, I stuffed some JBL Ferrotab tablets near its root, is that sufficient?

Since we are on the topic of trimming, can I ask: how to trim glossostigma?

BTW, I do not monitor this forum frequently so please do point me to the correct threads if I am asking a question that has already been answered. Also, did there used to be a listing of plants, and some information about how to plant them?

actually it is not a lotus (Nelumbo sp.), it is a waterlily (Nymphaea sp.)

the biggest floating leaves I had of my "red-tiger lotus" was 8-inches across, covered the entire surface of the tank

The ferrotabs should work fine, but you still need to make sure the plant (actually, all the plants) in your tank get enough NO3, PO4, CO2 and light.
