Recently, I purchased a West African Lungfish (Protopterus annectens) from a reputable LFS in Singapore. It was still in its bag with the label of the central African country it was from when I bought it at the LFS.

Having heard numerous stories about the parasites teeming in African lakes and rivers, I proceeded to deworm the fish with EIHO Worm Ex, which I suspect contains Levamisole although that is not stated on the bottle.

And to my absolute horror, within 24 hours, my new lungfish passed out a huge mass of reddish brown roundworms!

I think my experience should serve as a warning to aquarists to deworm ALL wild caught fishes, such as lungfishes, bichirs and ATFs etc.

Please do so before sticking your bare hands into their tank or attempting to hand feed them, as you do not know what parasites are lurking within, and whether the parasites can infect humans as well!

That's horrifying. Did you managed to get any photos?

    Thanks for the sharing.

    Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

Oopsy! That's amazing. Never tried that before, though.
