Anyone ever buy a fish tank would probably notice that it should come with a 10mm white styroform to put at the base acts as a cushion. Don't your think it's ugly!

Recently, I've been to Art Friend and brought a nicer alternative - Compress 5mm Black Styroform (see photo below) and it definitely helps to 'polish up' your tank to be a little more professional.

My 2 cents worth of observation. Anyone care for a comments?

I tested with a tank on top, the 5mm black stryofoam sit-in nicely. No problem. Since it has already compressed, it's more dense as compared to white color one.

i think the styrofoam is meant to distribute the weight of the tank evenly in case the surface you put the tank on is not even.
if the black one can do the same, all the much better looking

Where can we get this? What I've been doing is to run a length of black tape to cover up the white part.

I also used the normal white styrofoam but used black cloth tape round its edges so it blends in well with the tank and cabinet.

It should work with a black tape but somehow it will not be as neat. Anyway, just a alternative black foam for member who wants a little more choice... THANK YOU ALL.

    Hi All,
The original purpose of the foam (whether BLACK or WHITE) is to prevent cracks!

    How does crack happen?

Imagine you have a grain of sand on the bottom of your tank. Without any cushioning, and the bottom of the tank resting on a hard flat surface, the grain of sand will create extremely high pressure and force on the glass.
With the weight of the tank, the force created by the sand will cause the tank to CRACK!

With the foam, any foreign materials will be pressed into the foam against the much harder glass surface. Thus, eliminating the potential for any start of cracks.

For those of you without any cushion on the bottom of your tank, please put a layer of foam there now!

Absolutely! So it is irrelevant whether is a normal or compressed foam as long as something to act as cushion..
