How to trim Large Amazon sword?

Hi,
I have a large Amazon Sword (Echinodorus, I think) about 14inch tall in my left side of my 4ft planted tank.
The leaves are growing too long and covering the left side of my tank.

Does anyone know how to trim the leaves? Do I trim them short as I want, or trim near to the base?

I've never had a Amazon sword before, but I figure your plant is a rossette plant (as in, no runners, the new leaves just grow from the centre of the same plant ). Rosette plants are easy to trim, just trim away the outermost leaves, meaning the leaves that are furthest away from the new leaves. Trim the whole leaf away; position the cut as near to the "stem" of the plant as you can. The cut leaf won't grow anymore.

Ehhhh... rosette is not defined by the lack or presence of runners. Rosette plants refer to those with no stems or with stems that are so short they are pratically non-existent to a casual observer.

At least thats how I understand it.
