i use hydor extensively for internal filters.

built quality and performance are both above average.

if i am faced with your choices, i will definitely go for hydor.

u can enquire at petmart..but for 4ft.. i recommend 2229.. coz my friend is using it for his 3ft tank... has been doing a good job for abt 6 months already... satisfactory level= good.. seen it at work.. []
but they are ard the region of $300+ if i'm not wrong.. quite ex.. if not with a normal canister, u would have to modify a bit so that your output/outflow will go thru a wet/dry area..[]

Anyone have experience with Rena Filstar xP3? I have seen one and the built is quite solid. Should be cheaper than Eheim equivalent.

Sam Yick & Superstar have them. Looks to be good value for money. I can't remember the price but it is significantly cheaper compared to Eheim.

LSZ, i mean, if in terms of performance, it is comparable to Eheim.. then i dun see the need to spend the unnecessary extra dollars... in times like this.. every little bit counts.. and yes.. u need to look at long term too.. like replacement parts.. can it be interchangable with Eheim parts.. for e.g.. those Hailea filters... u mentioned that it screamed Fluval.. so.. can the replacement parts be used on it.. i think so.. but, of course.. when given a choice with no $$$ restriction.. me would like to get Eheim.. just like i would like to get AUDI cars.. hehehe[]... but Hydor should be quite a reputable brand lah.. since u used it b4.. u should know the quality..me poor student u know[] hehehhee...

I got the xP1 and xP2, $145 and $185 respectively. Compared to my eheim 2226, IMO they are more user friendly, for one I like the rotating water inlet and outlet on top of the filter. The other part that I like is the modular and adjustable inlet and outlet pipes, the outlet has a valve with a air tube attached. The standard package includes the priming aid, for eheim, it is sold separately.

My only concern is spare parts, don't seem to find any at lfs compared to Eheim.

Well, Rena is made in France... at least not made in China (err...no offense to anyone from China on this list ). If comparing to Eheim (made in Germany), it is probably like comparing Audi to Renault... at least not Proton or Daewoo.

To me, it is good value.
