Covered tank for myself too, though largely for aesthetic reason, and also the occasional smell of ammonia (my tank is on my work table).
Most people prefer open tank for ease of maintenance. However for aesthetic reason most people prefer a fully or partially covered hood - Look at tanks in offices or shopping mall.
I started with open tank but 200+W of light is too much glare for the living room so I put back the hood. To prevent overheating, I DIY 4 fans inside the hood to force air circulation similar to what is in a computer. The tank temp is now 27~28C and so far no problem.

cos i have 2 red-clawed crabs which love to escape!
