All sand would probably do that. Just avoid breathing in the dust... I think setting up one tank every few months or so is very low risk. This applies more to people who work with sand on a daily basis.

That being said, it's still a good idea to step away from the cloud of dust that forms when you pour out the sand "violently". And keeping young kids away is a good idea.

I believe the ill effects applies only to long term usage (eg; construction industry), basically fine sillica can lodge in your lungs if breathed in.

as far as planted tank is concerned, hold your breath when you pour the sand in, wet it quickly .

fish are probably not going to be affected by it since the fine floating particles will be filtered away with enough water changes/filtration

It is true that Silica dust is said to cause problem to our lungs.

Although it seems that the problem is caused by prolonged exposure to silica dust, it might be a good idea to prevent breathing in the dust when handling the gravel/sand.

its usually wet before i can even pour it in...i wash all my gravel...regardless...unless its like ADA kind of sand.
