    hi guys,
some of theses blue shrimps are actually blue malayan variants. Therefore, it may fade away after sometime.

    Thanks

    Yours sincerely,

It did cross my mind too....malayans have this brown stripe running down the body. I have kept some 2 years back, it had a little craze a while back at Eco..(tho at that time, newbie, shrimps all die.). The bluish coloration if I remembered was quite constant and does not fade. I now think that Blues are a stable variant of the malayan shrimps (hence the cheap price). If you look carefully, they look like malayans too. Nevertheless, they are an interesting addition to my tank.

I bought the same blue shrimps from C328 as well more than a week back. Unfortunately some of them have since turned to having a brown stripe down the back of the body.

Interesting...now I am watching my blues closely....yesterday, I took some pics, still blue at that time.

Maybe they undergo color change when stressed...like normal shrimps.

Malayan shrimps are known to have quite a few color variants, including red, blue, green and black. Also with or without the centre white stripe.

Choice of diet will definitely influence the coloration of the shrimp.

    Cheers,

I noted that mine have different colours including blue and black. Not sure about red as I also have cherries in my tank.

Benny, any idea what kind of food would make it change what type of colour? Would be nice to try and see the colour variations...
    Cheers,
    Joe

Not too sure... From my experience, if they are feeding off wood and normal stuff, they become brown.

If they are eating JBL Novo Bits, Tetrabits or Tetra color enhance flake, they turn reddish.

You guys can experiment to see if it works. Keep us posted!!

    hi baranne,
For the malayan shrimp, the dominant male in the colony will turn reddish in colour. You will observe there is usually only 1 or 2 of them in your tank that is red.
Something about the water & the fishes that calms me down.

I also have blue shrimps, or at least they were blue.

Now into F2, F3 probably, and the offspring do not look blue any more. They look more greyish than anything else. If they are Malayans, I wouldn't have any shrimplets.

    So just what are they?
    Cheers,
    Andrew

Bought a packet of blue shrimps in HK along the "goldfish lane" early in Feb this year. Rememeber it was cheap, close to 30cents a piece. HK$30 for 15 or 20 in a pack.

Very blue throughout the time I had then. Very long lasting.

However, did a minor re-scape last month. all sayonara ... including some of the fishes ..... lesson learnt ....

In Hong Kong, you can buy tiger shrimps with blue stripes instead of red stripes. Not commonly seen here.

For the dominant male, would it turn as red as the cherry?
