It'll take a while for them to adjust to the food but it does work and with patience, they'll gobble them up pretty soon.

    hey Philip,

how do you dust a tubifex worm?? and do frogs need calcium supplements? or is it only when they are eating tubifex worms that they need the calcium supplement??

Hi Ranmasatome, dusting the tubifex worms is actually sprinkling a very minute amount of calcium powder onto them. As they're wet, the calcium powder will be absorbed into the skin somewhat the same way as how amphibian skin works. In a way, you could say that the skin "breathes". As froglets, they tend to have calcium defiency if not provided with ample protein and calcium foods if not available. This will lead to an abnormal growth such as having weak hind legs as well as fragile spinal column. If the tank has a UVB ray light tube, it'll do them good. If not, these alternate dusting of calcium powder helps in aiding a proper and much healthier growth for them.

    Regards,
    Phillip.

    think you misunderstood me...
i know what dusting is...its just that with the tubifex worms they are soo small per worm...how do you do it?? i used to have lizards when i was overseas so dusting was a common daily thing for the lizards...but now that i'm back here...with the laws and whatever... i dont keep them anymore... frankly its just not worth it...but recently i've been thinking of going to catch some local common species of froggies to keep also just for fun... but besides catching sphaerocerids for them daily i would like to find a new way to feed these froggies if i were to go into it again... as we all know its almost impossible to find the right sized pinheads in singapore and dusting fat silkworms is one thing but dusting tubifex worms...that i have to learn from you...thats why i ask how you do it..as in the process?? like is it just a pinch of supplement and then sprinkle over worms, then mix it up??

also if they take crickets..wouldn't the keratin in the exoskeleton be enough for them, asin calcium intake? i only used to dust the worms that i fed to my lizards.. but then i also had a BIG UVB light above all my critter enclosures...
by the way...know where i can get a UVB light around here??

maybe i'll go see what i can catch in the monsoon drain tomorrow..lol..so exciting!!

Alex, don't worry if they don't eat now as they've just undergone the metamorphosis period. It'll be a day or 2 more before they start eating. So don't fret. Get the tubifex worms into a shallow dish along with them. Leave them with it. They'll eat it. Be patient and soon you'll see.

Also, it's normal for them not to eat for a while. They're finishing up the fats in their tail, hence the shorter it gets during metamorphing.

    Regards,
    Phillip.
