If you are not keeping small fishes and don't have a lot of fine leaf plants, the Eheim/Attman surface skimmer is alright.
Otherwise, the Tom Surface Skimmer or the Original Ofa one is a proven working design.

I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?
Currently my tank surface is getting lots of oily stuffs which doesn't seems to be removed by the eheim equivalent. Do you think the tom will do the job?
Cheers!
Hi Benny,
what is original ofa?
Cheers!
This could be due to the fact that you are not using the surface skimmer properly. Besides installing it to the input tube, you need to adjust the flow rate to balance the water entering from the surface and the bottom.Originally Posted by fishgoogle

Ofa was the original German brand that was in the market before the cheap S$10 to S$20 skimmers flood the market. You can still find it at Sam Yick for S$70 each. The design is exactly same as that for the Tom brand and works the same too.

Benny is right. I had been using Eheim and the skimmer inlet is always stuck with small leaves and small fishes (eg otto) and shrimps. Apart from the filter flow rate, I used to adjust by pushing or pulling the whole skimmer finely in or out of water. The trick is to adjust the floating arm so that not the whole arm is filled up with water. If the whole arm is filled up with water, the oily film will not be sucked into the skimmer.
Because of the above reason, I just changed to Tom.
So far, quite happy with Tom except that it is not as powerful as Eheim in terms of suction power.
i too do not know if my skimmer is working or not....mine is the atman skimmer. There is a weight at the bottom part...is this weight suppose to be moving up and down when its working? The weight always stops moving after sometime. I am using the ehiem 2013, is it not powerful enough for this kind of skimmer?
And also, its difficult to maintain the inflow from the surface via the 2 inlet. It floats with the water level...
Recently, brought a Tom one and it proven very good, I like its black color instead of Eheim's green.Originally Posted by fishgoogle

I am using those $10 type. Working fine. Just need to clean up once a while cos sometime when feeding fishes and they do not eat fast, some of the food will flow into it and get struck. Partly also caused by my riccia.
For good or for ill, I will walk on the path chosen by none but myself.
Suggest you to try the "Tom" brand, imo works better.
The Atman turns out to be a death trap for otto and shrimp.

i use the eheim one and it has so far killed at least three ottos and six glow red danios, two lamps eyes and one mini puffer.
i've once recovered one danio and two cherry shrimp from inside canister.
it does do the job of removing the filmy ick and i've solved problem of fauna getting into it by tying fish netting to skimmer's dual inlet.
so far so good.

Hi Guys,
I have replace the Atman skimmer with that of Tom's, and within minutes I could see the real difference, the oily film dissappear. Really glad that it works, cause have been manually scooping the top water for the past 1 week, not a task which is enjoyable.
Thanks!
