    Hi Guys

When i was younger..i used to catch some fishes at our shores.

Unfortunately.. those days.. my marine knowledge is vry limited. We just hv salt water and air pump!

Therefore i was not successful wit keepin wild and bought fishes. So now tht i am goin to start a marine with MH, skimmer and sump, i wonder if i can relive those gd old days of catching some small fishes on our shores.

Do yu think it wl survive??

    Thanks

    Stephen

    Hi Stephen,

Wild caught specimen always attract negative comments from environmentalists. Especially when collected in a designated protected area or in a unsustainable manner.

With the prices of marine fishes at an all time low (thanks to Nemo), why not forget the hassle and enjoy the hobby in a more fuss free manner? I can stock a 2 ft marine tank to the brim with S$20, albeit with the more common species.

Besides, wild caught species may carry disease and wreak havoc in your tank.

However, I do understand that's nothing like the pride and joy of your own hand collected specimen.

Good luck with your new marine setup!! And don't forget to show us pictures!!

    Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

With MH, Skimmer and Sump.... I'm not surprised! Hope the hole don't get bigger than it already is.

Apollo, with an mh, have you considered a chiller too?
If you've learnt, teach, if you have, give.

If all ok.. mai tu liao.. bring me the SALT !!! Haha...

Hole wl be getting bigger for sure.. Still hv to buy loads of LR.. Any kind reefers care to spare me some as well???

    Hi BFG

    My Tank is 4x2x2.

No, the return pump is not meant for the chiller. Will hv another pump to run the chiller. Meant to say to test the 2 items simultaneously.

Anyway i wasnt the lucky buyer ! Guess my search for a chiller within my budget is still ON...

However, another forumer think its a blessing in disguise. He thinks Resun CL650 cant perform the job. Anybody hving that chiller care to comment?

Few I knew ran Resun Chiller and seems happy with it.
Some compare Resun/Atman with "branded" chillers, which claims that branded ones are more efficient and consumed less power. I remember someone made a calculation between a Resun chiller and a German chiller in a forum. It takes 5 yrs of "power-saving" to make up for the cost of the extras you paid for a German brands over the Chinese ones.
However, there were many unofficial complains that the chinese chillers are noisy. I went to one of the marine LFS in Jalan Kayu and stick my ear to the chiller and could only hear a reasonable buzzing. My wife thought I was crazy though

All these aside, I do believe that there are somethings that this chinese chillers lack. I love the removable "taps" (the connector from chiller to pipe, just like Ehiem) of many expensive brands, but my pocket tells me my priorities are something else.

Getting a Resun CL-650 is less than $450, CL-450 $400. Given such prices, I would be extremely happy as long as they can work efficiently for 2 years and I would replace them with something else of the same price later.

Low resale value? I agree.... Maybe you would call these disposable chillers?

    Cheers,
    Goondoo

    Hi Goondoo

Tks for the enlightenment ! Totally agree wit yu. Already burn a hole and yet see nothing. Best i start wit a low end chiller and get things going.

Hopefully along the way i strike TOTO or 4D and wl get a better chiller !

No, I am from the Darkside....

Anyway, for any chinese products, ask about the warranty.
The lower price paid means normally it would be either no warranty or warranty at a premium. Check also what does the warranty cover, (I am not sure if the "expensive brands" cover wear and tear parts but I know Resun doesn't).

i wun comment much on the chiller issue as one man's meat is another poison. Just take a stroll down the forums and ponder why so many ppl are selling their resun or atman chillers and upgrading to other models like Artica and Daeil???

For me, i'm getting Daeil 1/2HP for my 5fter. Yes, pretty pricy i must say but the last thing i need is to worry abt equipment failure.

As for the noise factor, i wouldnt compare wat i hear in the shop as the sound per se. This is because of other factors like background noises from the road or wat have u. I take it as watever i hear in the store, i multiply it by 2. If u can, see who has the chiller that u have in mind and go to his place to listen to the hmmming sound. u be amazed how loud it can be, esp when it kicks off a couple of times a day and runs for 20 mins each time...

btw, while prices of some common fishes such as damsels might be cheap, we shouldnt be the executor of their demise. Anyway, this issue had been discussed and buried.. Be responsible aquarist is the word...

Btw, things seems to have changed.. equipment are getting cheaper, LS are getting more expensive...
