this betta foerschi

err...a bit confused....

currently under betta foerschi there is

betta foerschi
betta foerschi "mandor" (betta mandor)
and Betta foerschi "Nataisedawa" (Betta strohi)

the names in the brackets are alternate names people call them by...is that right?? whats the big difference...been looking at some pics and there isn't much difference...

I am under the impression that the "mandor" and "nataisedawa" refers to populations of "foerschi" from those villages/towns. very possibly these would eventually be found to be a different speices from B. foerschi. Probably right now it is best written as B. cf. foerschi "Mandor" which means we aren't sure if the fish we have is really NOT a foerschi.

Those are locality names attached to different populations of fish that are attributed to be similar to Betta foerschi, or are suspected to be Betta foerschi itself.

There's several differences between the Mandor and other populations of the foerschi. The population of foerschi from Tangkiling is a dark greenish black. VERY beautiful fish.

Betta strohi is another species altogether and also a beautiful species in its own right.

As for the Nataisedawa name, I think it was spelt correctly as Natai Sedawak. Its some native village name. Probably MrTree can give you better info.

i think i kinda have the same idea... its just that somtiems the fish looks different and somtimes the same...sometimes the locaclity is different and sometimes the same..and all of these factors are interchangeable with the forms i've seen... granted i've not seen toooo many of them..lol.. but it seems like the variation is quite large leh.. i dont know much about fish taxonomy but im sure colour alone should not be allowed to classify it as another species...maybe as a subspecies in this case??
