    hi guys,

recently i found my tank water pretty cloudy, last time i used to be able to see thru the tank (as in from 1 side, can see all way to the end of the other side).

but now the tank water is pretty couldy.......wat could have happen??
i've thought of some possible problems, but maybe u guys can help me source out the correct problem....

    1) could it be overfeeding.....but normally my fish are able to finish up the food in 10 mins

    2) as i'm using UGF (started of wrongly), could it be something wrong with the biological filter

    3) lastly, i've placed quite a few mesh of riccia, asi planning to have a riccia foreground, could that have affect anything?

    plx provide advices! thanks!

Was the a power failuer or power switched off and the UGF failed for work for a day or more? This could cause the bacteria in there to die and cause cloudiness.

If the fish are not dying, perhaps noting to worry except to monitor.
If worried that there is a bacteria die-off, do water changes and then put in air-pump to oxygenate the water.

Add bacterial to the water. When bacterial develops it will clear the cloudiness at no time.

Buy those bottled bacteria from LFSes. Seachem or Nutrafin are good brands.

I once had a simliar situation to yours when I was first starting out. I added bacteria, water floccuents, more filter sponge, blah blah. It still returned.

I got fed up, and did a 100% water change. It didn't come back.

Changing water 100% will stress you fishes of sudden change of water parameters.

    Here is what I've done:

I've a Jebo 828, before introducing to my tank, I actually wash the filter thoroughly, then add water(tap water) into the canister, then add anti-chlorine into the canister to nuetralise the tap water. Leave the canister as it is for 10min, then add bacterial into the canister and hold it for 30min. Then do the same thing with a bucket of water and then add bacterial and wait for 30min. You can prepare both canister and bucket of water at the time. Lastly I start the canister having only the bucket of water to act as the resevoir of tank water. This way bacterial will build up much faster. I actually let the canister run over night but I think 30min of cycling is good enough. Now your canister is ready to be introduced to the tank but you have to take care of the water with anti-chlorine first then introduce baterial into the tank again for atleast 30min. Once everything is done, you can introduce your canister filter. This way you should have your tank instantly ready with clear aquarium water. Remember never wash you canister with tap water unless you want to goes through the same process of building up bacteria. You can actually clean your canister with the aquarium water while you are draining the water when doing a aquarium water change.

Well, above is my personally encounter when I was hit by water cloudiness. Good Luck.

Yes, 50%. But have to treat with anti-chlorine first then introduce bacteria and let it settle for 30min. Almost forgot, remember to add aquarium salt too.

Yes that will stress the fish. But back then I was frustrated enough to do anything. Well.. it didn't come back, and my fish were ok.

    YMMV though

    hi taz...

for lazier person like me will be just to start up canister filter and dump the bacteria near inlet...the good bacteria is actually present everywhere in your tank.
kevino's method is very good because it is directly seeding the filter sponge/bio ring/etc. and very efficient method for new canister filter/filter material...

after all and done, be patient and wait... a day or two
cloudiness will disappear[should]... your patience will be rewarded with crystal clear water

a.....UGF is undergravel filter.... i stopped using it recently, changed to jebo canister filter...
i still a bit blur abt wat u guys have said.....maybe can further clarify my queries,

    1) wat u mean good bacterial from LFS.....izzit the SEACHEM "clarity" which aims to clear bacterial boom considered the bottled good bacterial??

    2) how to dump the good bacterial near the inlet...??
thought the solution is suppose to be poured into the water

    1) Nope. Clarity is what we call a water floccuent, it binds minutes particles in the water so that they become bigger and can be filtered out easier. Bottle bacteria is stuff like Nutrafin Cycle and Seachem Stability

    2) Just pour it near the inlet

    alamak...i bought wrongly..sad....
so i see, nutrafin cycle and seachem stability are bottled bacterial.

so will clarity aid in clearing the cloudiness??

I tried Clarity myself... it clears to some extent. Depends on your filter media also, whether or not it can filter out the larger clumped particles.

But that's for non-biological particles. Yours sounds like a bacterial bloom, so we're talking about bacteria here, millions of times smaller.
