i place my pc fan which is quite strong directly facing the water surface for my 1ft tank. quite good i think, since even really hot weather where ambient temperature is around 31C, i can get around 26-27. for much cooler weather like today, it can drop to 25C. there is even once when it drop to 24C but i havent try placing the fan at 45degree, have to think of a way to support it in that position.

I used to place 45 degree. For now, after changing to new fan, I place it facing down as the desgin of this fan cannot allow any other positions.

For the dust point of view, it seem like facing down is better as the dust will be blown directly into the water and thus dust will not be collected on the hood, lighting, curtain...etc. As for which positioning is cooler; well, need to monitor further to conclude.

I have actually use the 90 degree method previously and now i change to 45 degree method, i will like to comment that the 45 degree method actually work better on comparison.

Another thing open for discussion is the size of the tank, anyone experience lesser effort taken i.e. lesser no of fan needed for a biger tank.

The fan is basically to transfer the heat out of the water, so in order to maximized the effect you should thin out the water from the outlet of your filter and blow the fan towards the water outlet.

I repair refrigerators in my line of work and we use fans to increase the evaporation rate of the defrosting trays. I find that for sure the maximum evaporation rate is reached whe you blow the fan so that all the air blast is in contact with the water surface. Place your fan to blow across the longest side of your tank and just make sure that all the fan blast is directed at the water surface.

My fan is lock to the centre of the tank in 45 degree, it to ensure the wind can be spread evenly.

In theory, I agree with squee on blowing on maximum area of the water surface. But in practise somehow the result is otherwise??????

I also noticed that NA has all the fans facing down.
I think its due to how he mount it, BTW has anyone actually noticed NA has aircon? that might be the reason.

If the fan is close to the water pointing directly down the noise is much higher as it's getting 'feedback'. I agree with Irwin's 'fluid dynamic theory' and placement for maximum coverage area.
One AC fan for a 3X1.5ft will cool 3ºC for me. Useless when the temperature reach 35-38C outside on hot months [so upgraded to a chiller]
One AC fan for a 5X2ft will only cool 1.5-2C. Noise of additional fans intolerable so got another chiller. [haiz]
