There are number of way LED is produced, out of the 3 known method I know, 2 does not produces Red, Green and Blue light component directly:

    - GaN (gallium nitride) + yellowish phosphor coating
    - zinc selenide (ZnSe) on a ZnSe substrate

The above 2 method uses mix of blue and yellow light, since yellow light simulate red and green to our eyes. We are able to precieve the output of blue and yellow light as white light. Without red light component, plant is not able to photo, so LED produced by the above 2 method cannot be used for planted tank.

The third method involves europium based red and blue emitting phosphors plus green emitting copper and aluminium doped zinc sulfide, LED from this method emits real red and blue components which are needed by plant. Generally speaking, only such LED is suitable for planted tank.

maybe got more method of producing an LED nowsday, I just know these 3.
