IMHO E.Tennellus is usually smaller and leaves more thin than the dwarf sag.

Should be easy. Sagitarria subulata will grow taller than E.tenellus. In fact, it can grow close to 2ft high as it matures and conditions becoming crowded. And it frequently gives out those 3-petal white flowers on the water surface.
I have kept both before.
In this tank, the background plants and some of the foreground plant are Sagittaria subulata.
For this tank, the foreground is E.tenellus.

At the LFS...
S. subulata: leaves about 5mm wide and rounded tip.
E. tennelus: leaves are about 1 to 2 mm wide, tips are pointed.

Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.

Sagittaria:
Runner chains grow into the substrate.
Echinodorus (the echinodorus group that produce stolons, eg, E. tenellus, E. quadricostus, E. bolivianus):
Runner chains grow on top of the substrate.

Another feature of Sagittaria is they have prominent lateral 'lines' on the leaves

On pictures, they look more like identical twins![]()

In addition, E. tennelus will turn reddish brown under high light, CO2, nutrient coniditions.
Whereas, S. subulata will remain green.

Riding on the thread, how about Echinodorus angustifolius and S. subulata, they are more similar right...?

E and S has different leave veins

pardon my ignorance, how to accurately ID both?Originally Posted by Simon

Wow.. lots of nice descriptions to differentiate them.
My 2 cents, get them both side by side, the much smaller/thinner one is tenelus.![]()
