I had clean up my tank last Saturday and now everything is nice and clean, awaiting for my base fertilizer and sand for my planting. But something is amiss...I notice that at the base of my overflow, there is a section where a pool of water is still there.

I took this picture before I drain out my tank. From this picture, you can see that the protruded piping is the only outlet to my sump at the bottom. The problem is that once the overflow stops, the water level will be levelled with the pipe and will not be drained. It was an inaccessible area in the tank and I could not manually drain it. When I discover this pool of stagnant water, it had hundreds of strands of "dunno-what-the-heck" worms swimming in it. I was kind of worry and thought that this pool of water must somehow be drained off.

I took an air-pump tube and somehow manage to squeeze into the compartment. I then bravely suck the worms-filled stagnant water into my mouth to let it flow out! Yucks! Really disgusting stuff I tell ya! Sad to say, after all this, it is still not completely dry...

    I feel sick now...

Yuck. And that was a really bad idea... you have no idea what those worms were and you gave them a chance to enter your body.

You could easily have filled the tube with water from the tap, hold both ends of the tube closed. Submerge one end and hold the other end lower outside and release.

Ewweeuu! I feel sick too! Yucks!

But to be honest, you could have used a few other technique to drain out the water. Some folks have been sick from accidentally swallowing dirty tank water. That's certainly not a good way to enjoy the hobby.

Anyway, hope you solve the drainage problem soon.

    Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

Eee-yuck. Hope you cleaned out that portion of the tank too. Those worms sound disgusting.

next time use a longer transparent tube. in order for siphon action to start, all you need to do is to get the water PAST the highest point of the tubing. you DON'T NEED to suck until the water gets into your mouth

the moment you can see the water passing over the highest point, let go and allow the water column to pull itself through the rest of the tube.
