I've noticed that among my Trigonostigma espei, sooner or later they get this white growth on their bodies, it appears as white patches. After a while, it seems to get worse and then a red sore will appear on the fish's body, after which it usually dies.

Is this a case of fungus? Am I right that Methylene blue treats this? Do you guys have any reccomendation for methylene blue products as I heard some can stain the silicone of the aquarium?

    Thanks!

    Hi squee,
me too just had an invasion by them( fungus ).M blue will stain but is most effective against the fungus. I use Tetra something( brand ) very effective will contain the infection within 1 day. small bottle costs about $7 bucks yellow in colour.
Something about the water & the fishes that calms me down.

Can also use potassium permanganate. The colour will go away after a day.

    Hi,
I used Mardel Copper which I bought from PetMart. Works very well. My tank is free from white spots and the cardinals and red-nose do not rub themselves onto the wood anymore.

    It works!

    Hi,

sorry for bringing up this old thread..

got some questions to ask regarding Methylene blue..

    • Will Methylene blue affect beneficial bacteria?
    • Can I dose it into planted tank?
    • Which brand/model is preferred?

    Please advise.. Thanks!!

You could try pimafix and melafix. It doesn't affect the plants or stain stuff and leaves a funky tea tree oil aroma in your tank.

    hi,

will melafix or pimafix affect fish eggs?

I was advised to add medication - methylene blue - to prevent fungus attack on the fish eggs..

btw, if I add the melafix or pimafix to a healthy cycled fish tank.. Will it affect their health?
