Apistos are happy even in near neutral water unless you are into breeding them, then soft and acidic water is important.
This is where ADA soil comes in. To me, acidity can be managed through using black water extract but what I liked about ADA is it softens the water.
Which otherwise I would have to use peat.
Apistos love live food so if you can feed them baby brine shrimp, they will be happy. And when they are happy, they will show their character, colours and finnage to you.. trust me on this.
As for planted scapes, they are ok with heavily planted tanks.. only thing is they will love to hide till you can't see them!
You can keep them with small tetras.
I also find pencilfishes very suitable because they don't snap up food as fast as some of the other tetras. Hence allowing the Apistos time to pick at the food.
