Scape for Apisto

Hey Guys,

Since we are have been discussing some topics on apistos. I would like to seek advise from apistos keeper out there on the setup for these beautiful fishes.

Some question that I have queries,

I know ADA soil is the best to rear then, but if for those who can afford is there and alternative?

Would apisto live in a heavily planted tank ( Current setup a 2ft tank for a pair of apisto)

What are their eating diets, food or any special food?

Any recommendations of fishes to be kept with them or preferably only a pair of apisto in a 2ft tank.

Hi Nick,
Apistos are happy even in near neutral water unless you are into breeding them, then soft and acidic water is important.
This is where ADA soil comes in. To me, acidity can be managed through using black water extract but what I liked about ADA is it softens the water.
Which otherwise I would have to use peat.

Apistos love live food so if you can feed them baby brine shrimp, they will be happy. And when they are happy, they will show their character, colours and finnage to you.. trust me on this.

As for planted scapes, they are ok with heavily planted tanks.. only thing is they will love to hide till you can't see them!

You can keep them with small tetras.
I also find pencilfishes very suitable because they don't snap up food as fast as some of the other tetras. Hence allowing the Apistos time to pick at the food.

Dude, the set up you have currently is good for apistoes already. What you might wanna do is to add peat granules into it. A couple of pencil fishes for dithers and you've got the best place a pair of apistoes could ask for.

Just transport the tank back. Will lay in the ADA soil... the will do the scape with a friend

Pencil is a better choice especially it seldom hunt for its fries.

But its hard to find nowadays.. and they are jumpers!

A heavily planted tank is what they like best. ADA Aquasoil will help you alot in getting them to breed and generally be in best health. I fed mine bloodworms, flakes, granules. Shrimps are a nono.

I kept mine with Cardinal tetras and two otos. I bought Yamatos and a whiptail catfish, both died. Yamatos were eaten up my my Agassizi, and the whiptail showed signs of bites.

It is good to see the apisto breed. But what do you guys normally do to the fries when they start growing big? Will their parents start getting agressive towards them?
