I've read a bit on this undergravel heating thing, and I guess it's really not necessary. It's just like an improvement, to help plants along.

i think you can also consider getting a manual timer. what we have in singapore are in 15min intervals. so you can possible put them on for 15min and off for 15min for the duration of the day to simulate the heating of the substrate. since it can get really hot in WA you may want to do this only during the colder season.

Yes in winter I believe it would help(even though our house seems to keep a fairly constant temp.)My friend seems to believe it has helped his high tech nano along and kept his gravel clean because of the slight current. In my tank at the moment I have found some gases and black nasties in their so I just though it may be a good idea to do since I'm changing my gravel over. I have also found a thermostat for a descent price if need be I could use that(it is made by hydor and comes in with or without a LCD screen.)
