Are fish affected by motor vibrations?

I just bought a cheap internal filter for my non-CO2 1ft cube and I just had a random question pop into my head: Are fish affected in any way by motor vibrations from equipment like internal filters and powerheads?

Reason is the internal filter I had is kind of noisy; I can hear the droning sound when I place my ear against my tank wall.

Searching google doesn't turn up any information, so I thought I'd start a discussion here

I remember somebody asking this before in another forum. I think nobody has done anything scientific. My guess is that unless its knocking very hard, it should be fine. Afterall, most fish will encounter this except for fish that live in tanks filtered by canister & sump users.

Did you mount it on wall or resting on the substrate? Mounting can reduced the sound considerably. Resting on the substrate need to keep repositioning until the sound is lower.

If mounting on the wall, it can also be adjusted to minimize the vibrating sound although its not very pleasing to the eye.

    Just my opinion

I also have a little power head in a 1 ft tank, attached to the glass wall with the rubber suckers.
The sound made by the power head is quite audible, that I can hear the clicking sound when it's very quiet at night.

The pair of shy betta persephone do come out of hiding once in a while, so I assume they are not extremely disturbed...or so I hope...

If the noise produced is negligible, it probably has little effect on your fish. You might want to read this article squee:

    Interesting article

Is air bubbling (for sponge filter) louder or a power head ? I can hear both when it's quiet....

Ah looks like I wasn't using the right search terms on Google.

I think air bubbling would be more gentle sounding than a noisy impeller from, for example, my current Boyu internal filter that I'm thinking of removing. The rattling is driving me crazy; if I were my fish in that 1ft cube, I'd jump out of the tank. The filter started acting up this morning, rattling like mad. I'm cursed with this filter and my noisy Eheim 2215 as well.

Re: Are fish affected by motor vibrations?

Trapped air causing cavitation within the impeller chamber might be causing this, or the impeller is not seated right in the chamber?

I had a noise problem with my 2nd hand IQ3 but it didn't bother me so much.
