Hi all, being a newbie in Aquascaping, i was wondering if it is possible to aquascape my arowana tank. My father said cannot as the arowana will eat the plants or try to uproot them. Would like to hear some views.
    Thanks!!

There are at least 20 KNOWN hobbyist planted arowana tanks in Singapore and definitely more out there. Sam's Pets and Aquarium has been doing it for years until recently when they stopped trading in arowanas.

Search AQ for posts using keywords Arowana. Plenty of information and pictures.

You can look in the gallery of my website. Link is in my Signature below.

I was browsing the planted tanks in AF and I was REALLY shocked and taken aback when I saw the beautiful planted arowanna tanks! They are REALLY nice...

Not really nice to advertise but here's some examples from AF:

    Selling some koyok

Planted aro tanks are nice.. but they'll need more maintainence than a normal planted tank .. need to monitor CO2 poisoning, pH, kH etc more carefully as a wrong move may cost u a few hundred bucks to a few thousands..... you got to be more careful during your experiments/adjustment...

my old tank.... now it looks nothing like that.. coz it's algae covered..

Yes, any fish you put in with the arowana that can fit in it's mouth, risk being eaten... so don't put in any fish you are not ready to lose.

Generally, put small, fast and agile fishes.

Don't put fish that might be poisonous.

Eh... given that you dad's tank is already matured... I caution you to be extra careful... you wouldn't want to kill his expensive and I'm sure very precious baby. Feel free to run thru your plans on the forum or with me or other planted arowana tank hobbyists. Acutally, I highly recommend that you do that. I killed my own arowana when I revamped the tank... and I'm not a newbie.

Not really. It's not anymore trouble then any large planted tank. There are some extra pre-cautions, but otherwise, no big deal.

Care to share what you find is troublesome?

Hihi... I know this thread has been dead for a while for trying to go for planted arowana tank too...

I only had my own shrimp tank and some moss so knowledge of plants isn't that great so here goes my long list of questions?

Not having a chiller and considering not to haveCO2 also...possible?
If no CO2 what are the types of hardy plants suitable for a 5ft tank?
If CO2 then what is the rate of CO2 to be safe from killing the arowana? (Eventually the arowana is the prized feature of the tank)

Saw at arowana dynasty the tank in front of the shop has got a White rare arowana with the bottom filled with I think is Nanas tied to wood. Will the Nanas survive? Or it's like a wait till the plants die then buy new ones.

Sorry for the long list. Thanks to all old bird who replied!

Not having a chiller is not a problem if you keep your water temperature cool in other ways such as having a fan, or if you are happy keeping a low light set up that you are currently using. In this case, you are restricted to plants like Java ferns and Anubias barteri.

If you are adding CO2, then you need to provide enough light to encourage plant growth. the low light plants can usually survive without CO2 injection.

The number of bubbles per second in your tank depends on your setup and the amount of plants you have in the tank, and not to mention your tank size. Until you give these details, nobody can give you a good answer.

The plants at the bottom of the tank in the snow white platinum arowana tank at Aro Dynasty is Java Ferns. These emersed form are tied on coconut husks. Eventually, they will turn yellow and die, floating all over the place and clog the filter. However, submersed form plantlets will grow and from there, it's easier to manage, but the plants should still be anchored properly.

Here's the fish when it was taken at Aquarama 05..

    Cheers,

benny, is this really a "rare" aro? I mean I assume this to be the Osteoglossum bicirrhosum which is already silver coloured to begin with.

No. It's not that rare. You can buy it at Macpherson road for S$68,888 anytime.

What makes this a sought after fish is the discoloration from a regular silver to a snow white platinumum tint. Otherwise, it's a very cheap fish.

    Cheers,
