trifasciata is the smallest Apistogramma, if i am not wrong. Some Nannacaras are smaller I believe. All cichlids will be somewhat territorial and aggressive towards their own species..... while I doubt dwarf cichlids (except rams) will be as cheap as tetras, barbs...

How small is your idea of small? Bolivian rams are rather peaceful the way dwarfs go... But they are not really small... Apistos, however, usually are bad tempered to be peaceful...

Taeniacara Candidi is a good choice as well as Dicrossus Maculatus or Dicrossus Filamentosus imho.

it's nothing much, just got to wait for it to develop. just lookin for some dwarfs that dun disturb other fishes in the tank, get their area an dun take up much space.that's why i am looking for the smallest ones. but price wise could be more as explained by some of you guys. guess just need to keep looking till one that fits.i am not into dwarfs so that's why i dun want to get expensive ones which i dun have the knowlegde about.
the Dicrossus Filamentosus seems like a good choice cos it grows up to 4cm only.any idea where can i find this cichlid and how much? thanks.

How about Rams?
They are cichlids. They are dwarf. And beautiful. Peaceful but not shy. Cheap to get.

Do bear in mind that most if not all of your shrimps will become snacks for the cichlids. That was what happen to me with a drawf cichlid.
Btw, that is a good idea to feed your fishes with tubifex worms. But does the worm "spill" into the main tank when some greedy fish bite on a whole chunk of it? If you notice, most planted hobbyists refrain from using live food esp. tubifex worms to avoid introduction of parasites into their tank. Imagine how difficult it will be to catch that sick fish or the addition of medicine to the tank which may affect the plants(like crypts for eg.).
I will advise you to switch to flake food. If not, at least feed freeze dried worms to the critters.

ok...guess i'll visit biotope. the last time i went, the dwarfs' price were on the high side.as i am a beginner with dwarfs i dun think i'll purchase at that price.i have not even thought about how much i can spend on a pair, need to do budgeting.if i can get 1 pair for $30, that will be good but i better stop dreaming...
You want good cheap specimens, visit Toh's apisto farm, near Teo's Aquatic (plant farm) at LCK. I got my breeder pairs there. Very nice and pretty cheap, if you buy more that is.
You usually can't get those with a red edge on the dorsal but the males are the farm are usually of this quality. Pardon the mark at the middle of the body. That was an injury caused by the female because she was protecting her eggs.

That's a trifasciata male. Note however that usually only the young males and females are offered for sale.

Just wondering when was the time you purchased the tri pair? I had been to Toh's about a month ago and understand that they have stopped breeding/selling apisto.
