as long as you can see bubbles coming out from somewhere, you need not worry about exploding bottles.
i so not know what you mean by "the other end". maybe you'll like to elaborate more.
and usually diy co2 cannot generate enough pressure to push co2 through the ceramic diffuser. most likely, co2 will leak through weak joints, just like what's happening to your setup.
    you should use a reactor.

    Hi Ahkarboy,
For DIY Co2 usually when the diffuser doesn't diffuse, it means that either there is not enough pressure or there is a leak somewhere along your pipeline. I would go with Tawauboy, exploding DIY Co2 is alittle farfletch. Just my 2 cents.
Something about the water & the fishes that calms me down.

since yours is a small tank and you do not want to use a pump, try using those plastic airstone. you'll need to buy a few to find one that gives you a number of bubble streams.

hmm....dont expect too much from air stones as the co2 bubble basically rise to the water surface and disappear, there's little mixing with the tank water....
meanwhile try to monitor ur ph level so see how well the co2 are diffused...

I personally feel that DIY CO2 should go along with reactor, either internal or external.
However, since you mention that your tank is small, maybe you can try the flippers, those that come with Nutrafin DIY CO2 set!

You can if you want, but for me I'd go for a small basic diffusor. I bought mine for $3 at Nature Aquarium, I've only found it there. It's behind the counter, hanging on the wall among those things for sale.

You're refering to the ones used in marine aquarium - the wooden airstone? If it's so than it's an interesting alternative to using the usual ceramic diffuser.

Its not too bad a idea to get Nutrafin DIY CO2 set!
Since you were saying that you were worried that you DIY CO2 might explode!
The cannister whereby the fermentation take place has a saftey feature whereby in cases of pressure built-up in the cannister, the lid will come lose!
Thereafter the first month, you can DIY your own CO2 using the canister!
